Yeh I want pics or I won't believe this. Certain things OP stated sound fishy.

With this being the second incedent, I wonder if an aftermarket company or even BMW themselves will come up with a solution to better protect the cooler. I'm sure they would be in very high demand.
Why would they fix the problem... Everyone is making money on this... Dealer and manufacturer and no one is gonna stop buying the car because of the cooler covered with plastic.. People just think I'm an idiot cuZ I ran something over..

I certainly have learned one thing from all of this, If I turn off my engine due to an engine light, or malfunction, I'm turning it off in NEUTRAL. Rediculous its so difficult to get it in N once its off and cant be restarted.
That's what pissed me off the most the fact u can't put that car in neutral..and that's what can damage the engine more trying to turn it on while it has no oil in it, just to try to put it on neutral..

It has to be at least 70% of the value. At brand new, with only a few options, would have to be more like $55000 or more.

That's exactly what the engine is 25k plus two turbos plus labor..
This is not a plug and play.. Doesn't anyone know how much BMW labor is an hour.. EXPENSIVE.. And if they are idiots it's gonna take longer.. But I have no choice but to trust them because of warranty issues...

I know in Canada I the insurance would probably written off the car, the only reason that they may not do it is because of the fact it is still a very new car(because of the worth of it), please keep us in the loop on that end of it as well.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I don't care who fixes the issue. Either way this problem needs to be addressed..... And fast! This isn't something we should have to worry about on an $80k car.

I think I saw the car at the dealer because my M4 is there too. The service people told me about a guy who ran over something and knocked out the oil cooler and is getting a new engine in. Best of luck to you and hopefully the claim goes through!

Actually if you turn the car off while in neutral and push the start button again without your foot on the peddle its like a second phase of shut down and it'll put the car into park. You hear a good click though so I don't ever do it.

Sorry this happened to you OP. I agree with the others, this is so weak that something like this can happen to our cars so easily. Im scared to drive my car now. These are 2 serious flaws with the car and the dct. Sad to think it doesn't take much to ruin the engine.

As a percentage of value had the damage been from a collision the car would probably have been totaled because it will never be right after "repair". Here the car can be fixed completely by replacing the engine, so there is no reason to total it. I am surprised the turbos are not priced with the engine. When an engine loses oil pressure it must be stopped immediately, not after one block or one minute.

Doesn't mean service guys know the owner. Most correlate an M driver with men.

Sorry to hear it OP, and good luck.

This is getting more interesting, as the OP appears to be from "Pembroke Pines, Fl", and some fellow from "San Diego, CA" apparently thinks that same car is at his dealer.
Are both @Oliivy1977 and @TeKiZeRo (1-post) in the same physical area? Hope so, or we are talking about a couple of cars needing new engines...
Freakishly coincidental...

I would recommend folks get the M-Performance lower lip as soon as possible. At least this $350 part could attempt to take the brunt of the damage when encountering road debris.

My RS6 has the oil cooler in that same general area, but not laying down flat. It is standing up in the vertical, but just as well could be damaged with road debris given the lower engine cover is plastic. I will count my blessings given no issues since 2003.

A few posters are giving the OP crap for posting, but I can totally sympathize with her since I also had to work really hard to purchase all my M cars.

The location of the oil cooler is redonkulous, why would the engineers put it there knowing any slight damage to it would render the engine useless.

I'm glad I saw this thread and has officially scratched M4 off my next car purchase wish list.

I thought with a base price of 60 ish it could be close. Didn't know OP is fully loaded it seems.

Very unfortunate regardless
