You're kidding, right? Cars are not yet rolling off the assembly line, so nothing can be substantiated yet.

I am betting that U.S. cars will come in at E46-like weights at the curb, and Euro models will be a bit less.

3300 pounds with no fuel is possible for a Euro car.

As I've said, I'd love to be wrong, but this is not my first BMW-marketing rodeo.

When the U.S. magazines, Car and Evo get through with their testing, we'll see what the cars actually weigh.

By the way, from my point of view, E46-type weight is terrific, given the paunchy E9X cars.

I did the same thing - seeing if it was any better in black. The grill is not AS BAD - but, still. Like the Audi, I guess they had a small heating problem with the front design. Looks like they fixed it.

Not sure I could ever buy one, but I'm sure I'll give it a test drive just to rule it out.

As you said, cars are still in pre production stage. So what on earth do you know to claim that 3300lbs is possible on a Euro car with no fuel??? And why isn't 3300lbs possible with fuel

At this stage BMW is pretty much into the advanced stages of EU type approval with TÜV doing testing on areas such as brakes, emissions, noise, masses and dimensions etc. (I happen to work in the European vehicle approval loop). Each type approved vehicle gets a "birth certificate" called a COC (Certificate of Conformity) which has to include the technical specifications of the vehicle. To register a type approved vehicle in Europe, there has to be a COC (there is also a complete vehicle type approval document for each type approval, this document is between 50-100 pages with drawings, technical details and test results etc). Otherwise the vehicle has to be individually approved (a process that involves that each vehicle has to be presented to the DMV/DOT for approval in each case and With a bit of documantation needed).

My point is that the DIN weight BMW quotes is a type approval weight that European registration certificates will state. If the quoted DIN curb weight of 1498kg is a hoax, then that will be a major deception as that weight is also stated in every registration document in Europe so it's not something that can be hidden in small writing in a brochure. If the DIN weight suddenly becomes 1580kg or similar, people will certainly feel deceived.

Don't think BMW deliberately wants to find themselves in that situation...

As I've said several times now, we'll see.

I believe BMW marketing to be historically inaccurate in these matters.

By the way, in one of your notes documenting EU, DIN and SAE weights, didn't one of the options provide for no fuel?

All of the current curb weights include fuel. The difference is that EU and DIN has 90% fuel and US curb weight has 100% fuel.

The only thing we already see is that you're repeatedly making illegitimate assumptions.

BMW put the money where it counts, not just flash. M4 weighs over 500 lbs less. Notice this NA V8 has a lower redline than the M's FI V6?

You can have the HUD instead... Who the heck will drive over 90 mph and have time to look at the dash with all of those gadgets? It's not a space ship, it's a car lol. Try to stare at that on the track over 120 mph going in to a hair pin turn :-)

Thanks man, now I can't un-see that! I actually like that car too, but now, all I'll think of is the chuckle when he turns on the self destruct!

You've got to be kidding me. This the biggest hunk of BS I've seen in a performance car. Let's all look at the pretty cluster and not worry were we are going. After all, doesn't this car drive itself?
How many other variations can this dashboard have? I really like the icon of my favorite car sliding in and out as I'm breaking the speed limit. It makes my sack heavier.... I'm so cool... This is what we need now to pacify the gaming crowd. The way things are going in the auto industry.
I'm ready to go back to my old e21 and enjoy the drive!

This is where BMW is heading. Mark my words. Everyone so happy with electro everything, digital sound, dynamic this in M cars. BMW is just following the Japanese now because this is what they want. It started with moving window controls to the doors. It's depressing, I wish BMW would lead again and say, no. A proper cockpit is free of distractions and driving controls rule over video stuff.

LOL, you talk like grandpa back in the days...who need computers, look at all those pretty buttons, icons, wow, I'm so cool... can this thing drive a car or do the dishes too?....

Look at the bright side, maybe someday those fancy electronics will allow your rearview mirrors to look back in time too!

Where does it end?
I wonder how popular a base perfromance car like a 2 series would be if it went back to it's true roots? Analog everything, crank windows, manual seats, A/C optional, minimum sound insulation, no bells or whistles like adaptive lighting. In other words turn it back into a 2002 but with the 2014 drive train?
You could knock off a thousand pounds, (too bad the mandatory gov. safety stuff that would take off another 800 lbs.) get outstanding mileage, lower costs, and have a top notch perfrormance contender.
I would seriously by one.

interior looks totally 90s, wTF were they thinking? grey plastic and straight lines everywhere, what the hell ?

the exterior is way too busy for my likes. the front is way too big, single-framed Audi's are still to be looked at, but this?? looks like the fence of some top-secret monster-hiding place to me. predator face - exactly to the point.

the rear view is not that bad, but still too many lines there, and the rear lights - me not like. also the exhaust pipes look weird, like the horizontal positioning (like almost ALL other manufacturers do with their quad-exhausts) much better.

but I'm sure this will find its buyers - young below-30s on a leasing contract or with too much money and no taste and the entire japanese market of course.

the display is cool, I like gadgets and gimmicks - on my playstation in particular! when I crash there, I won't die, so that allows me to check the G-meter from time to time. but in a real car, on a real street or track?
