Does anyone know the method that they use to check if it has previously been flashed? I suppose there are date stamps that they look at? This is why I wouldn't mess with the car. I'm chickenshit when it comes to things like this.

They can look at the max boost pressure in the logs. Anything greater than normal would indicate a tune.

NB : my experience is only with piggybacks
It really depends. My dealer has never said a word about any of my tunes, and in fact, when I've mentioned them, they just shrugged. One of my SA's actually encouraged me to get a tune and some mods when I picked up my F31 years ago lol That said, since I've started leasing, I've not had to bring my cars in for big engine or trans issues. I'm just going in for basic maintenance and small things like rattling lock pins, alignment, small tire leaks, etc., plus, I usually run piggybacks, and don't mess with the ECU There's definitely risk. It's all up to you if it's worth it though. If you're getting bored with the car's performance, slap a JB4 on, run map 1 or 2, and see where you stand This is the 4th BMW I've tuned, and not yet had a dealer or BMWNA issue, but ymmv

If anything, I'd want to tune only to edit out the obnoxious cold start

That's all I have used BM3 for. I still pay for an extended warranty. Is there a possibility they would void the warranty if the engine went ka-boom? Yes, but then the checks they do (looking for higher boost in other ecu's etc) would not be an issue in my scenario as my map is all stock apart from cold start delete. I always re-lock the DME when I put my car in. They also updated the software recently after I had an issue and nothing was said. If your DME is unlocked and they try it then it will raise a tamper code.
