Rattling and Shaking on 1st gear
Car is at about 48,000 miles. Doesn't always happen, but I notice when I take off in 1st gear ( manual ) I feel a rattling and shaking under the car, more towards the rear, but also the shift knob shakes.
Thought maybe it's the clutch, but the fact that it doesn't always happen, I feel as if the clutch is fine. Anyone else experience this? |

My guess is the "shaking" takes place when you try to move from a stand still in Sport+ mode. Most likely "clunk" sound occasionally too.
I am also going to guess the rattling happens at a specific RPM during acceleration and is most likely coming from your exhaust valves. Do a search or three and you might find some threads already discussing these issues.

I have it too. I think the more the car warms up the less you gotta be on the clutch is what I've noticed.
When it's warm I barely have any time on the engagement point b/c the car has so much torque. If you stay on a little too long, even a second, you will start getting the rattles and judder. |

I would have to give it substantially more throttle and revs (3k+) to produce a smooth engagement.
The level of throttle and revs that used to produce a silky smooth start, is now causing the chatter (started happening around 39,000 miles). It's more apparent when the powertrain is fully warmed up. |

This sounds logical, the clutch pressure plate will form hard spots from slipping the clutch on occasion. A city driver in traffic everyday will increase the issue. When warm these area are closer to the driven disc causing chatter. |

All this chatter about clutches might mean a new pressure plate is in order.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a feeling that it's the clutch & pressure plate, or it could also be heat spots on the flywheel. I did more research on other forums, and it seems others with M2/M3/M4 have experienced this once their mileage went over 20k miles. It seem more common in cars driven in stop and go traffic.

I just started to experience this in my 2017 M3 about a month ago. Car has ~24,000 miles. AJS1000RR describes it spot-on from my experience:

I should add that like others have said, this is ONLY when pulling away from a stop in 1st gear - no other gear changes, up or down, produce the shuddering/vibrations. I know we're not really sure what it is at this point, but would this be a warranty item? I'm the second owner so I don't know how the first 20K miles were on the clutch but this is awfully early for these parts to fail? Last edited by Bleser; 12-14-2019 at 06:03 AM.. |

Has anyone had this diagnosed and fixed by their dealer?

I brought up the issue during my last service visit (Crevier BMW, Nov 2019). The technician noted on the repair order: "clutch is operating normally". I disagree obviously.
My 2016 is still covered under the 4yr/50,000 maintenance plan (which covers the brakes and clutch), so I'm not sure why they're resistant to changing the clutch since it's covered under the 2016 plan. I emailed BMW customer relations, and they called me pretty quickly (they left a voicemail). I'll be calling them tomorrow to explain the issue by phone. I might also ask them to read this thread so they know this is not a one-off issue only with my M car. Last edited by AJS1000RR; 12-17-2019 at 06:54 PM.. |

Thank you AJS1000RR . Definitely not just you as I have had this happen to my car multiple times after just driving it around time and giving it time to fully warm up. What I hate about these kind of issues is just that - it will be hard to reproduce unless you just drive straight to your dealer and let the foreman experience it while it is happening. I'm probably going to have to plan on doing just that.

It does indeed help to give it more gas but who wants to pretty much launch the car at every stop light. I agree these issues are really hard to get through to the dealers. We all know something is wrong here but chances are they will say everything is great. I haven't tried bringing this up at my dealer yet but it will happen soon. |

Something else I wanted to add as I have been trying to determine how I'm going to reproduce this for my dealer:
- Get the car warmed up by driving for 20-25 minutes in normal city driving/traffic - When at rest, you can reproduce it by not touching the gas pedal at all and simply releasing the clutch in either first gear OR reverse gear - The car will automatically add a bit of gas to not stall and you can feel the car shudder This became very clear as I was backing into my parking space yesterday morning. Not sure if it adds a clue or not that it happens in first and reverse, but thought I would add that here. |

Update: I contacted BMW customer service, and they are contacting Crevier BMW to ask them to investigate this issue in more detail.
The plan is for me to get the car heat soaked, and go by the dealership next week to have a tech test drive it. I'll also print out this thread to show the dealership that other M3/M4 owners are experiencing the same thing. My car is a 2016, and the maintenance plan for 2016 models covered the clutch and brakes as wear items. Legally, by covering the clutch under the 2016 free maintenance plan, BMW is already acknowledging that the clutch is a wear item. Last edited by AJS1000RR; 02-13-2020 at 10:30 PM.. |

I have a 2016 with just about 30K on it. Noticing the same issue and went to the dealer. It was hard to describe and they just said everything is operating normally. My warranty is up in Nov so if its issue that is covered I'd like to get it straightened out.
