2014 M3/M4 vs 2014 Z/28 at the Ring

http://wot.motortrend.com/2014-chevr...eo-416573.html

This lap time is impressive. Will the M3/M4 be with in 20 seconds of this number?

Read the article and find out that the time was recorded in a light rain and that engineers think 7:31 is doable.

That's a stripped down track dedicated car. The time is impressive to me for sure. But I don't expect any car that has pretensions for being a daily driver to have to achieve times anywhere near those.

The Z28 will toast a Production M4 on the ring but they are 2 very different cars.On the street in normal use it will be quite different.

The "true" ring times will never be released. BMW doesn't post their ring times. A third party will post a time which will likely be close in my speculation.

Do we even expect the M4 to beat the ZL1 around the track, much less the Z28?

z/28 is also standard with carbon ceramic brakes. Only comes with 6 speed manual and manual seats (just like my M3). This car also makes it's power without the aid of turbos. Probably will have better gas mileage figures than F8X's as well. Can you send text messages and update facebook with it, no. Can you go to track days and beat just about everything out there, yes.

Price will be in the $65-70K range. This is very stiff competition for M4. Me, I like my 4 doors. If I were a coupe kind of guy, I would think the z/28 would get a serious look.

P.S. - This car would finish over 1/2 mile ahead of M5 on Nordschleife.

The Z/28 is fast as hell. That being said the EPA Fuel economy is going to be 14/17 which will be much lower then the M4. It does make its power without turbos but its a 3 Liter vs a 7 Liter. I think this car is kickass. I am just worried that these will be marked up to 80k by dealers. Also you cant get that badass pearl white color.

I would take that Z28 ring time with a significant grain of salt, given that it the car is not what you will be able to buy off the shop floor. Start with track specific tyres and work upwards through different parts to production and a more heavily tuned engine and track specific suspension set up etc etc etc.

More 'Ring time PR spin.

Thank you. To this day I am waiting for people who say BMW's ring times are slow to show me a BMW Factory driven time. Because there are none but even if a car is faster doesn't mean it's better.

Why can't the 430hp/390lb-ft 3300lbs M4/M3 beat the 500hp/470lbft 3800lbs Z/28?

More boost is the answer if it doesn't. BMW will do this I reckon for the GTS edition, and of course every tuner will as well.

Can't wait.

+1. Drive one and you'll know the difference. I keep wandering into Camaro and Mustang dealers because of the specs...but leave dissapointed. In my opinion, the ZL1 and Boss 302 are great driving cars, but very underwhelming interior, fit and finish.

Obviously, they're going for performance over giving you a plush ride. Look at the price difference between other cars of similar performance. For the $20k+ difference in price between a Boss/ZL1 and M3 you could upgrade a lot. But then again you need to upgrade some of the M3 performance bits/power to catch up to their performance.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm sure most people would prefer to be driving the M3, unless you're on the track losing to a ZL1. If the next iteration of the Mustang looks as good as it's supposed to and narrows the gap on quality interior, we may have to take a longer look at the mustang offerings.

I fully expect tuners to quickly find a way to get 75-100whp out of the M3 rather quickly. Making it quite the beast.

Z28 will easily put down mid 500rwhp as it uses same engine as C6 Z06. However, it is still too heavy at 3500lbs. For a stripped out track only car, I'd rather have a used C6 Z06 over this. It means little to nothing that this car has back seats, as I expect this car to be too harsh for daily use. I have driven a SS for a week(rental on a vacation) and while it was a fun car, I'd hate to live with it daily. Horrible visibility and interior quality, and surprisingly small inside considering its outside dimensions and weight.

IMHO the M3/4 should probably run similar times as the c7 stringray, so it probably makes more sense to predict the M3/4's ring time from the stingray's ring time (whenever it gets done)
