BMW Crank Hub Fix
Hi,
i would like to know of the best solution and suppliers to protect the vehicle from happening. Litchfields offer a capture plate - must have it supplied & fitted with them What other solutions are there? i believe this is a common issue. Can anyone recommend any other solutions? Thanks |

I'm not convinced on the capture plate doing much to stop it slipping, unless anyone has shown that it's caused by the crank bolt losing some of the torque it's tightened up with.
There appears to be a few replacement crank options - VTT, Gintani, maximum PSI. I've seen a keyed one from Maximim PSI, and it looks a great design to me, and that's the one I'd go for if I felt the need. But I'm not tuned and still under warranty, so doesn't make any sense to me.

I think the plate is a worth while thing to do as it must help, there was a post on here and there wasn’t any recorded failures where a plate had been fitted.
Also if you speak to litchfield they recommend just fitting a plate. I can supply VTT plates for £125 delivered or £330 fitted at my workshop in Liverpool. Have done a few now for lads on the Facebook pages. |

I'm not saying it isn't, but I'm not really understanding how it would?

Fitting not a issue. Just need a recommended source to supply which design is better litchfield or vtt? I spoke with litchfield they will not supply only, but benefit I guess is the warranty by litchfield if it does fail.

Tengo, a lot of the failures are apparently due to the crank bolt backing off every so slightly, allowing the crank hub/timing gear to slip. The plate just stops this. There is a company in Germany who rebuild engines, when they rebuild S55’s due to crank hub slip they fit a plate and give a 12 month warrenty on it. To do nothing is mad, especially for the price of a plate. |

There is no well defined fix no matter what aftermarket vendors tell you. If it was a real and common problem, BMW would have taken care of it a long time ago.
