Found it this morning on the rear carpet mat - can't see it missing from anywhere obvious?

Well much of the fabric and plastic bits of the car (and most other cars) are held together with those plastic rivets so best of luck finding the hole it came out of! Looks dirty so more likely to have been stepped on and brought into your car that way than dropped out of the inside somewhere - so probably not off your car. The plastic pin normally has a flat plastic hat (the pin is pushed into the body of the rivet to secure it) it was probably broken when it was removed and has probably been replaced - they would not tend to drop out and if the pin was out as your pic then it has been removed - was your car serviced recently?
