Should I Walk?

Ok - I've been talking to a dealer about a used 2019 M4 Comp pack with about 28k miles for $65k USD. I put a deposit down contingent on the dealer fixing some scratches on the trunk lid which I imagine the previous owner opened with not enough clearance (if it doesn't look good I take my deposit back and don't buy it). While that has being fixed, I've continued to do my diligence and noticed a couple things.

First, because I was blinded by excitement originally, I missed the clearly aftermarket intake and charge pipes. I also noticed the ride height is maybeeee a little lower than stock (pics below).

That made me call into question other parts of the car I wasn't sure about, M sport exhaust, carbon fiber diffuser, spoiler, etc. which the dealer told me were all factory options initially. I'm just skeptical now.

Rest of the car was solid, I checked all seams, wheel wells, etc. No issues. Clean carfax. Drove well, no idle issues.

How much should I be concerned here? Do I walk? What else should I look for? This does put me in a bit of an advantageous negotiations position as now the dealer has spent money on the car to repair the trunk lid and my deposit is refundable. So there is that to consider.

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Depends. For 65k, it should be bone stock w/ less miles. Unless this is the color and spec you need to have. If you got another car to drive, I'd wait. But if you need a car, and it's the spec you want. Go for it. It's just money at the end of the day. Can't take it with you. Maybe offer 65k out the door with tax, title , and registration. That way, the car will be priced at 59-60k. Best of luck!

Check that the spark plugs have been done. The Carfax doesn't show it but the Carfax doesn't always have everything. They're done at the 3rd service interval or 30k miles. I see the 3rd was at 22k miles since I'm including the break-in service on this specific car so just make sure it was done since it wont be covered for you after you buy.

You can ask about the flash counter as well if you're concerned it may have been tuned. I would push to at least view the internal service records. Many dealerships tell you they cant share but a cool SA will at least let you view it. Just say you want to be aware of what's been done and what you may have to do in the near future citing the Carfax doesn't provide all details.

If car is CPO'd or has a warranty don't worry. But it would be nice to see if it was ever tuned.

There's a year left on factory warranty - my main concern if there was more work done, is there a chance the warranty would be voided?

With that aftermarket intake etc, I’d assume it definitely has been tuned at some point. Ride height is definitely lower than stock. A lot has been done to this car non OEM/aftermarket wise IMO.

There is an OEM MPHAS kit that could account for the lower ride height. They could easily show the receipt for that or you can see the parts are from that kit by visually inspecting it. There is no OEM upgrade for the intake or that replaces the mid pipe that I’m aware of.

A quick search shows what is in the kit they are referencing.

Wow bmw sells a lowering kit for the Comp pack!? If it's OE, I think I need this... Lol

OP, you should make absolutely sure they verify it wasn't overboosting because that will void the warranty. They will know if they plug it in, but not by the flash counter as that usually gets reset anyway.

Is it the angle, to me that car sits badly. Rear is dumped with huge gap in the front. The picture below is my old 18 Comp on KW HAS before I went coil overs. That’s how the car should look and not like a tractor in front.

If the previous owner changed the midpipe and charge-pipes, there’s a good chance it’s been tuned. It doesn’t matter if they say the car is under warranty when they sell it to you, if something blows and it gets flagged as having been tuned they’ll deny warranty. I’d be worried enough just about the midpipe being changed in regards to a void drivetrain warranty.

Finally lol at the factory options claim for the spoiler and diffuser.

As part of negotiation you could ask them to ensure the software is upgraded to latest I-step level. If I understand correctly, the newest versions of the software will trip a flag when the dealer connects the car to their ISTA saying the DME has been tampered with if it was tuned. Assuming that doesn't happen, then at least as far as potential for a tune-voided warranty you would have BMW documenting that no such evidence exists prior to official purchase.

EDIT: But if you do this, then you're potentially making it harder for you to tune the car yourself if you'd want to do that (haven't been keeping up, not sure if an OBD workaround has been achieved for this problem or not...)

Charge pipes and intakes are from SSR performance. Nice setup, but you might not be comfortable with the mesh style intake filters. They make great noise, but don't filter much in dusty environments.

Are any of those mods really “factory” changes? Surely even the genuine BMW mods are dealer fitted?

If that’s the case, then either the dealer doesn’t know what they’re talking about, or they’re lying to you, which makes me question anything they’ve told you. Sounds like a good reason to steer clear to me.

side question: why would stock component increase the value of the car? It seems to me that the tuned components are always better and should increase the value instead.

Sounds like a lot of money but if you decide to proceed have them put in writing they checked that the car has not been previously tuned.

Why did they connect the MAF sensor like that? It looks sloppy.
