Tell me I am wrong- F8x idrive design hideous
let me state I already have a deposit down on the new M4, because I know it will be an amazing machine.
HOWEVER- what is with the new dash design and the idrive/nav screen looking like it was bolted on after the fact??? I find the old E9x dash design to be so much more fluid and attractive (idrive in a second hump if you wheel that balances out the instrument cluster). To me this is a bid deal, almost to the point of making me rethink the upgrade from my 2012 E93. Help me with your thoughts?? |

I like interior design of new 3 series. I prefer it over old double hump on e90s. It simply looks cleaner and modern.
However, what I don't like about it is that there are more plastic pieces here are there in new one compare to old 3 series. |

I am not a fan of the 'bolted on' look either, but I certainly wouldn't let that be a deciding factor in a car purchase.
Your 2012 is only 1 year old so you've got many years of good motoring left in it so why not just stick with it? |

I don't mind it, as it's better integrated than the pop up navi in the C63 which looks much more aftermarket. Screen quality is very sharp even in direct light, not sure how they do that.
I see where you're coming from having initially had similar doubts, but having spent time in a 328 lately the screen placement really is a non-issue. The new A8 has a decidedly similar screen setup for what it's worth. |

Screen is bigger than on my E92 M3, I thought I would hate it, but it isn't that bad, and as said above the sunlight really doesn't bother it. They said they were trying to make it more like the 6 series one, that was the reply I got... Had to go F30 since the E90 M3 was out of production, but I have my eye on this F80 as a replacement when it hits...

It cheaper for BMW to produce one dash design compared to 2 models for the E9x. Also just having the floating screen attached must be easier and cheaper too. I just wish it had some kind of hood or tint/tilt to fight reflection a bit.
(Using a transflective LCD helps it look bright and sharp even when there is direct sunlight.)

I call it the pop-tart idrive.

It's the same as the series F30 and F32. Personally, I think it's awesome. I think it stuck into the dash is very bland and old school. Good for the 5 series, but totally at home in the 3 and 6. I've loved it each time I've driven it. I'm in the minority though. |

Trust me, you don't get more sunlight than in Houston (unless you also happen to live this far south and live on concrete roads). |

People tend to make way to big of a deal over these screens IMO. I'll admit that I don't like low resolution screens as can be found in Toyotas etc. The near pac-man look feels a bit dated... But if it's integrated, free-standing or pop-up matters little to me. The new style does look more modern and allows for a lower sleeker dash but trade off some glare protection. It evens out. The Benz as almost everything modern Benz is quite bad though...ouch.

+1 don't like the design. Looks terrible from outside the car looking into windshield as well. A small issue overall but it would be nice to have the option to order a hideaway feature or no screen at all. Probably will get used to it after a while.

Had it on a 328 loaner as well, and preferred it. There's also a functional aspect to it in that it's less in the periphery so you can keep eyes more on the road.
With the e9x hump, I do occasionally find myself looking down/into the dash to see something on the screen, only to look up and see brake-lights coming up at an alarming pace. |

The E9x double hump was hideous a truly terrible piece of design, I honestly can't see why someone would want it over the new dash.
Stopped me from spec'ing nav on my old car. |
