Stupid question...will they be able to do a visual of cars that fall within this production period to see if the drive shaft was greased correctly from production and send me on my way..or is this no its and or buts.

The recall indicates that the driveshaft will be replaced. My understanding from reading all the related documents is that the flange on the driveshaft isn't bonded correctly to the driveshaft, comes loose and slips, which would require the driveshaft to be replaced.

Thought the fix was going to start December but my dealership just informed me that BMW might not have the parts available until February. :

Some of you were asuming that BMW change from CF to Steel. Is it possible to go the oposit way? From steel to CF?

Absolutely possible, but BMW won’t be doing it as part of the recall. I looked into the issue quite extensively and even saved the driveshaft from my 2015 M3 specifically in case my 2018 M3 had a steel driveshaft. As it turns out, my 2018 has a carbon driveshaft already.

Dude sorry about your M4, I had to replace the drive shaft on my 2011 M3 coupe E92 because it was making a metallic sound in first and second, I also read of several other M3 with the same thing. I’m wondering if the E92 M model had bad drive shafts also and BMW didn’t know about it or didn’t want to recall the part.

Although I don't believe the issue was the driveshaft malfunctioning..... sad times though
It would be red tagged with an open recall regardless. BMW could not resale it until the recall was fixed.

You have a 2018 M3 and he has the CF Driveshaft? Than you're a lucky guy

Thanks, though I think most of the 2018s have carbon. It wasn’t until near the end of production that they switched to steel. Who knows? Maybe the steel ones will make the last 2018s produced more desirable due to the rarity.

Yep agree - in fact, I'm not sure anyone has even proven they got a steel driveshaft on their M3 in 2018. (pics pls)

If they remove the affected CF drive shaft and replace, do you think they'd give me the old part? Wonder if it could be repaired/ recycled / sold?

Normally, parts replaced under warranty must be tagged and returned, though I doubt any aspect of the defective driveshaft can be rebuilt as a core. I think it’s more about accountability.

One hour to replace the driveshaft? BMW techs take their time doing everything. An oil change takes them 2+ hours.

I just received my first letter from BMW as well. Only other communication I received was an email from my local dealer couple weeks ago saying my car had a recall.

That’s crazy...although I lacked the best tools for the job, it took me 4 hours to remove the driveshaft from my crashed M3, because the 2-1/8” nut at the back has a ton of Loctite on it. This makes me think maybe they’re not actually replacing the driveshaft, but some sort of bandaid fix.

At first the fix was supposed to be ready by mid-December and now we're receiving letters that the fix is not yet in yet... Anyone know what's going on?
