Reviving an old thread, look what our Fxx cars can provide for brake info (snapshot), and to think these AIM engineers couldn't figure it out

Wheel speed sensor:
  • Wheel speed for all four wheels (km/hr)
  • Vehicle speed (km/hr)
  • Wheel rotation for all four wheels (0-n)
  • Direction of travel (0-n)
  • Signal quality (%)
Pressure sensors (bar)
  • Pressure for circuit1 & 2
  • Pressure for all wheels
Brake pedal travel sensor (mm)
  • Current pedal travel
  • Initialization Pedal zero
  • Current pedal zero point
  • Actual pedal travel distance

In order to use the M laptimer, do you have to have some sort of analyser such as M Performance Drive Analyser?

No, just a compatible iOS device. You plug the iOS device and start the app, then select on iDrive Mlaptimer. It's a cool integration and works well.

Does anyone have an update from Aim on better CAN support for the F8X ecu?

Would be nice to have brake pressure stats...

Use a RAM mount. The mount and arm shouldn't vibrate/move during your laps. If it does, that movement affects your G-force data.

RAM is one if the better ones out there....

I use Harry's...There's a learning curve to using it, I don't know every aspect of it, but when set up properly, works well. I found another phone enabled data recorder, recently but haven't tried it yet, so I don't have any experience with it. As expected, similar to Harry's.

Lots of vibration with my RAM mount on the windshield. Not ideal IMO.

Hi, I tried out harry's at sonoma recently (in my spec miata) and I didn't find it to be acceptable. The refresh rate of the GPS is too low to be useful. It seemed to me more like a casual tool to enable quick vids on instagram than an actual driver development aid.

I settled on a used AIM MXL Pro05 dash with an appropriate sensor package. Part of the reason why is that many other drivers in the area with the same car use it, so there's a possibility of benchmarking myself against the front runners in the class

You need an external GPS device for Harry's to work properly. A lot of people who use their phones' GPS have problems. I have XGPS 160 paired with Harry's and it works like a charm.

Good tip thank you.

Does Harry's get brake and throttle position and data from other sensors for f8x?

Not sure about the brake position but it does show bunch of other data including throttle. Again, in order to get accurate and fast data points from the car (into Harry's app) you need a good OBD adapter. Unfortunately, you don't have many options if you are an iphone user. I use BT1 and it does the job.

Any more news on this? I’ve been using a MXS Strada and Solo 2 DL but via the ODB2 port I cannot get any of the F_21 or M235i protocols working. Tried my car 430 as well as an F82 both the same. Any suggestions? How are you guys getting more data out of the ecu?

+1, it’s what I use.

Too bad M Laptimer is not available on Android. I guess I’ll migrate to Aim next year.

Hi, can someone help with the Trackaddict application and obd2 connection via MHD wifi adapter? The black mhd wifi adapter is apparently obd2 compatible but I cant get it to talk to the TrackAddict application. May be some specific iport setting is needed but I cant find any hints.

There is another option for those who want telemetry and video and want to spare some bucks (my case). Recently, I've put together some code to use a GoPro as video and GPS along with the MLaptimer app data. It is very straight forward to use, no need for wiring into any ECU neither pairing different devices via bluetooth. All you need is to go out on the track while recording with the GoPro and with the MLaptimer app. By the way, the MLaptimer for iPhone is a really cool app, specially if you consider that the car sensors (but the GPS) are very accurate.

The code I've put together will parse the MLaptimer low res GPS track with the high res GPS track from the camera, sync everything together, and output a csv file for rendering videos with Dashware or RaceRender. Even better, it also outputs a .vbo file, which can be used in CT to analyze the driving, with very good quality (of course, quality depends on how good you set up the GoPro). Check the results below and access www.easy-telemetry.com to know more. Note: processing the app files is free, but there is a little fee for processing GoPro files.

Great info in this thread. Anyone has the BMW performance drive analyzer ? It came out a few years ago and might be getting long in the tooth. Curious to hear feedback from those who have it and whether it's worth the $$ over the M Laptimer.
