2nd year in a row.
Link?

Also, since we're not running on "standard" tires but rather OEM spec, would that make a difference? Would the M3 handle better on the Michelin PSS star spec than on generic S6?

In my days of fooling around with MINI's, Conti DWs were the budget conscious alternative to proper summer tires. Good enough, and inexpensive, but no match for Bridgestone RE11s (RE71R's now), or Micheline PSS's (PS4S's now).

Conti is the default (cheap) German tire supplier for plain vanilla BMWs, and other German auto manufacturers. Higher end models get Michelin's or Pirelli's.

I'm glad ECS is an improved Conti alternative to DW's, but until TireRack or some independent org tests them properly, I'm not going to jump on Conti's band wagon.

For now, my street summer tire choices are between RE11/RE71Rs and PSS/PS4S's.

YMMV,

Re71r. Even on the street. Great tire and will better the 5p and pss on the track. But let's be honest Back to a previous post comment......No one really will track on those tires. The pss and 5p are garbage on the track after a few laps and some heat. Sure they can tick off a few laps, but they won't hold up on a heavy m3/m4.

I bet this new Michelin will suffer the same "on track issues". If I never tracked my car I would seriously consider them for a daily driver only.

Sort of hard to use your own website as reference fact.
You obviously didn't read the article. I work with engineers at Michelin and Continental and have incorporated their knowledge into the article to better educate the masses on properly sizing and selecting tires, and how the standards for UTQG are so lax, they should not be used as a barometer for anything (softness, grip, wear, etc...).

You might want to give the link in Post #10 a read.

Edit -

For example on UTQG. The Yokohama Advan Sport is rated at a low 180 UTQG, but it has nowhere near the dry traction, steering response, on-track durability, or cornering stability as the Michelin PSS or Continental ECS with a 300 & 340 UTQG respectively.

If UTQG was accurate and any sort of worthwhile barometer, the Advan should be much 'stickier' than the PSS & ECS, but it isn't and it is also much worse than the PSS & ECS in the wet as well. You really can't draw any conclusion by looking at the UTQG of the tire. That's the point and why you should read the link in Post #10.
Completely agree. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

Got the ECSs mounted yesterday and after an exhaustive test of about 15 miles I can authoritatively say this, new ECS tires are much quieter than a set of badly worn PSS. Haha.

Hopefully in about a month I'll have better input.

Someone let us know how it holds up on the track. I'm guessing it won't (much like the 5p). But let's find out....

So after about a month and half I'll say that I'm really happy with these tires. Overall to me they feel very similar to the PSS while having a fairly significant improvement in wet grip and resistance to hydroplaning. Provided they have a similar life expectancy and continue to be several hundred dollars cheaper I really don't see a downside to them.

There may be a very slight improvement in how progressively they break away at the limit over the PSS but, to be honest I haven't spent enough time at the limit of adhesion to feel confident saying that with certainty.

Any comparisons vs the MP4S? I'll be ordering a new set soon.

Curious as well but since these are both new, I doubt we'll see a consumer comparison for a while. Looks like the 4S's are about $100 more EACH!

Sorry to bump an older thread but since I'm stationed in Germany I could probably find the 6p's on the economy. I have 19" 437s. Should I stick with the 255/275 or go up the next size wider? I would like to try something outside of the PSS.. Price is about the same for either brand out here..

I would go up on the rear to 285 as they are made for a 10" wheel. Up to you if you want to stick with 255 or up to 265 for front.

There's test results between the latest rubber in this category on tire rack.

I've had experience with the PZ4 on my daily driver. Really refined and a great ride quality in every day driving. But soft sidewalls so handling was a bit vague. Dry lap times aren't as fast as PS4S but nearly matching the ECS in the dry.

So looks like Michelin comes out on top again this round. But both the PZ4 and ECS are significantly cheaper alternatives that are close though.

My personal experience - I went to 275/295 MPSS (19" 437s) and I personally think they look too bubbly. I don't like the look as much. The MPSS at that size are a lot wider than the stock 275 so it could just be an MPSS thing. I would go down in size next time.
