Exclamation What's wrong with this M4 exhaust? (PICS)

I test drove this 2018 M4 (Competition Package) today...

But it had these weird exhaust tips that protruded far past the body. I looked closely at them and saw the M4 logo, so they must be some kind of stock option.

The exhaust tips also have this corny-looking carbon fiber wrap.

Anyone know what the deal is with this? Is this all stock?

Not really a fan of how far out the tips protrude.

What do you think?

The comment from Jbonly21 explains it perfectly. Apparently they're adjustable.

This was EXTREMELY helpful, thank you for posting this.

I'd definitely need to clean these like in the video...

And the fact that they're adjustable is awesome to know. I had no idea.

I'd also get that M Performance carbon fiber rear diffuser. Looks great.

Thanks again.

You will want that exhaust. I have and it's very expensive. You can also adjust the tips and I guess it's personal preference but the carbon fiber tips are dope and highly sorted.

Thanks for identifying this.

Apparently once I clean it up it'll look a lot better. Plus I'd adjust them back a little so it's more flush with the body, that'll look better I think.

Thanks, I've been researching this like crazy, and you're right, I guess that's why the car sounded so good when I test drove it.

And the fact that they're adjustable is awesome.

If it is V1 they are also prone to cracking at the muffler and it is a pain to find a titanium welder.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check and see if this one is cracked!

I'm in the cracked muffler club with v1 mpe. It's mild but I'll need to find someone to repair the crack and put brackets on it, similar to v2.

That said, I'm still super glad my car came with mpe. It makes the s55 sound much better than without. And it's a $5k option/retrofit too

Thanks, maybe I'd have to get this welded before it even cracks... I've heard it stops the rattling exhaust sound that is common with these cars as well?

the fake ones also have the M logo.

The interior of the tip is titanium and you should see the rainbow colour effect. Once you clean them you will know if they are real or fake.

1. the tips are extended out way too far. They can be adjusted in
2. If you weld the areas that crack it will be more prone to crack if not already due to the heat cycling
3. They need to be braced/bracked to prevent cracking or cracking again.

+1 on those being slip on reps. And i do not think they can be adjusted anymore in. The tips are probably all the way on the exhaust to the notch and sit about that length out.

They really only look good if there is a rear diffuser that takes up some room or else they stick out too far.

My guess is previous owner had a rear diffuser and took it off at trade in but left the grimey tips on.

If it is in fact a MPE there are no notches. It is just a exit pipe, tips are locked into place with a 5mm set screw on the bottom. The close up pic make the can look like the MPE and the tips look authentic.... but like i said "from the pictures"
