Rocks behind calipers scratching wheels

First, the performance and driving characteristics of M4GTS are fantastic The negative reviews are way off. However, on several occasions now rocks have gotten between the calipers and the wheel wells causing deep scratches in the wheel wells. I have the carbon wheels. There seems to be no resolution for this issue. Has anybody had the same experience and does anybody have a solution?

Many, many others have had this problem and will continue to so. BMWNA doesn't care. BMW M GmBh is aware.

The solution, as indicated by BMW's front wheel choice for the M3/4 ZCP, is a 20 in. front wheel. Have you contacted your Service Manager?

Did you experience the scratches on your CF during track driving or normal street driving?

Normal street driving. 20 inch front wheels have been suggested, however neither of the M4GTS wheels are produced at 20 inches.

I just picked up my GTS this weekend. Loving it so far. Very impressed.

I moved from BMW to Porsche a few years ago when the BMW's started getting too bloated and blunt. I track at 991.2 Turbo S now, and it has had the identical issue with rocks getting between the rotor and the back plate. At least I know that BMW is not alone on these design issues. Porsche does not care at all!

Looking forward to comparing these cars on track when Spring breaks. I know they are very different, as will be the lap times, but should be great tradeoffs that make each one special.

I have not had problems with wheel clearance with the 666 wheels on my GTS, but I have had stones get between the brake rotors and the backing plates. It has happened on the road and at the track. The tires are sticky and pick up a lot.

I continue to have a similar issues and I have 20" ZCP wheels. Had the same issues with my 2016 non-ZCP M3 too. Even had my local service center clean out the rocks/pebbles from the calipers when I went in for the 1200 mile service.

Pretty sure he's got the brake shield issue and not the wheel barrel. It would be a pretty big rocks to get stuck between the 20s and the ccb calipers.

Bringing this thread from the dead....

I've been getting this screeching noise when I'm about to park... Coming from the front right... Went to look and noticed a groove in my wheel barrels... left and right. Geez! I was worried about this on my GT350R and The CF wheels... Little did I know, GTS has the same issue.

Has anyone, actually, had the wheels replaced under warranty?

Thanks!

Congrats on getting one bud!

I also have barrel scoring on one front wheel in particular. It's unavoidable and a GTS issue, GT350R issue, GT3 issue, F430 Scud issue, you name it.

I haven't heard of anyone on any platform with a successful warranty claim. It's considered cosmetic, wear and tear.

And for as many anecdotal horror stories as there are about tires losing pressure, even wheels splitting in 2, I've never seen actual evidence. If there is, I'll be the first to try to make a warranty claim with my SA.

There is a service bulletin on this issue and it is quite comnon for rocks to get between the caliper and the wheel.

I had this happen on both my 16 M4 and GTS. I take the handle portion of a hammer (hopefully rubber coated) and go around the brake dust guard and tap lightly. That should help free any little pebbles. You can also try to go forward and then backward a few times to free them. They use gravel in the winter here in PA and it seems to stay on the roads forever
