I can also see company vehicles being delivered more barebones because the employees could be forced to subscribe themselves instead of the employer ordering the optional equipment. Cheaper for the company. It's quite interesting that for BMW and other OEMs, it is more profitable to manufacture vehicles with optional, more complicated hardware as standard rather than sourcing multiple variants of one thing from their supplier, you know. Let's take Steering Wheel Heating in the new X1 as an example. There's no button for it on the steering wheel anymore. Meaning, BMW gets away with only one type of wiring, one type of steering wheel trim, and no separate button. That's a lot of money. Customers do not have to visit the dealer for the retrofit either - less training for BMW employees, too. And, obviously, if they wish to 'download' the option, they must download the BMW app and make an account. What's that mean? More incentives to spend money on other stuff, but, importantly, more customer's private data for BMW to use and abuse. Genius! /s Although, I am a bit confused because I've got the German configurator opened right now; on the 218i base model, it's letting me choose Seat Heating for 300 Euros on its own, but if I want Seat Heating Preparation for 0 Euros, I must also choose Premium Package for two grand. Happy days innit paying more and more for new cars whilst getting totally shafted in the process

Seat heating elements are already in the car, you just need to get the software block coded out when you're setting your mirrors to automatically fold and permanently disabling your turnblinkers

If you think about it, realistically you will only use heated seats for probably 3 to 5 months out of the year, or less depending on where you are located. Some times you may not even need it. So, if you are smart and keep up with it, you can remove it when you remember to and save a little. Think BMW is thinking that, if most of their customers are leases, then they would pay a bit less actually. Most though I think, would just keep subscribing to it and forget about it.

I'm also curious how this'll work when you sell the car with these subscriptions. Tesla had the bright idea to revoke everything the previous owner paid for when you sell it so selling it fully specd doesn't exist as the next have to purchase everything again. I guess that might be next if it isn't already so. |

I think the subscription model is a mixed bag. BMW will obviously make way more money this way but an informed consumer could likely benefit.
I think many subscription services make money by people who are lazy and don't cancel or stop services they don't need. For example, how many people have Hulu, Netflix, Pandora or whatever subscriptions that they barely use and are just too lazy to cancel? How many pay hundreds of dollars for cable TV that they don't watch often? The other thing is, selling these options as services can benefit consumers. For example, I subscribed to Panoramic wifi through my cable internet provider for $5/month. I thought this made sense in the long run because every 2-3 yrs I'd have to buy 2 new wireless routers anyway at $400 ($200/router) because their performance decreases over time and they become obsolete. Subscribing for $5/mo would cost $120 - $180 over 2-3 yrs and if anything goes wrong with the hardware, I trade it in. I can also trade in the hardware for the newest versions with the latest wifi standards for free. So in the long run, it makes a lot more sense than continuing to buy and update my own equipment. As BMW transitions more of their options to subscription based services, it gives consumers the options to use or not use them according to their individual needs and should also require BMW to fix any of the tech that goes bad. For example, if my seat heater dies in my 5 yr old out of warranty BMW that I've been paying $18/mo in the winter months to use, I would expect BMW to pay to repair the seat heater for free. Not sure if the current subscription model requires them to do it, but that would make sense. BMW would have an incentive to do this as they can continue to make money on a continual revenue stream from the current buyer and any future second hand owners as well. |

^Looks alright until you get to the front. I am a firm believer that these wild colors belong on exotics and not everyday BMW's.

Lol! I didn't take them. My buddy who works at the dealership sent me the photos. He's the one that ordered/sold the car to the Bimmerpost member.

As if there weren’t enough wrong with the G82 design, on this one the contrast between the green body and the black side skirt makes the car look like it is sucking in its stomach
