Sell my '16 M4 vert for '04 911 Turbo vert?

Sounds crazy, but I have Porsche fever and already love my base carrera 996, so what say you?

Turbo has low miles, two owner, full service history and a 246k Canadian original price tag, selling for $53k US. I figure it will not depreciate whereas my 16 is still falling like a rock.

Can always upgrade 04 tech....

Still feels like an insane move.

I moved from a ‘15 m3 to an ‘03 turbo (hardtop).

Please feel free to PM me if you want to discuss further.

For a street only car, it comes down to “feel” and the low seating position, hydraulic steering and mezger engine sounds are nice. You’ll have a lot of fun.

Random stuff will go wrong and it’s going to cost you like it’s a $243k cdn car, not a $50k usd car

tough call.

If you really like the 996 turbo then go buy it. dump the Carrera and M3. And pick up a cheap but modern beater so it has some of the latest tech and amenities.

me personally i'd hold out for a 997 turbo since they look 100x better inside and out

"Did you also recently graduate from college and living with your parents?" Ha Ha, I did see that thread. I even have my son, the recent graduate living with me. I am a 58 year old car enthusiast and I enjoy driving my new to me 996 911 more than my M4, though I do wish it were a vert.

As for odors, I always by used because the stink of depreciation smells far worse.

Same answer from me, but I think it’s a (much) better call than a 15 year old car.

I often think about making a similar move OP but I just don't want to deal with all the crazy repair bills that are inevitably going to come.

Plus Yellow?

Maybe a '17, it will be as fast or faster than a '16S, that's the year they switched to all turbo

Since you already have one 996 I feel honor-bound to advise you not to compound one mistake by getting another

This was the counsel Hitler wished he had before he decided to make his decision to fight Western Europe worse by invading Russia

Headlight jokes aside, 996 are actually nice to drive, especially the Mezger engine versions (gt3, turbo, gt2)

I can get a 2016 Carrera S Vert manual for around 75k. Turbo price has dropped to 49,900. I like yellow, and I find the 996 very engaging to drive. It is light and precise.

That said that little adult voice in my head keeps saying, WTF shut up and enjoy what you have.

Are they random dealer cars, or from friends or trusted dealers?

If it's random cars, I think you're better off with the newer version. You really do not want to foot the bill on a Mezger engine car with random history.

My car was from a good friend, but I still needed to be rebuild the gearbox from the power adders. $8k bill to refresh first and fifth gears, and no used gearboxes available for sale anywhere in the USA

If you like your 996 and it is in great shape, you could modify the suspension (e.g. using Spec 996 parts) and throw on wider / more aggressive tires and it would be a lot of fun for less cost. But you do seem to be pretty set on getting a convertible

It’s not about if you could afford the car as opposed to if you could afford the maintenance. So if you can afford the maintenance, I suggest you buy it! You have one 996 and you love it, get the turbo! Go go go!

I can easily afford maintenance, that is not the issue. Its more one of reliability and financial common sense (the depreciation hit on the M4).

My adult brain decided to pass for now. If a perfect Turbo comes along.....

From my point of view, it still stings a little to have to cut a check for $8k for a gearbox rebuild or whatevers for unexpected 15yr old car costs
