Most people who do this are all about the "Euro" look. The irony being that in Europe every single M3 has a front license plate. It's required and nobody (and I emphasize nobody) has a problem with it. They don't use tow hook solutions either.
Funny you state this. I am European and live in Munich, I guess for any mid-European this is rather strange, it might give a James Bond feeling, but no one in Europe would drive around with hidden number plates...
Why would you? You need two number plates, one in front, one in back and if the cops would catch you with one or even two missing, you're srewed.

I think it's great like in some of the US states you dont need a front plate as it allows a smooth design of the front, but in Europe we are so used to the two plates, no one bothers.

Euro plates look good. Unfortunately, here in US the license plates are ugly and doesn't fit nicely in the front.
Hope someday car manufacturers will design tow hooks in the middle of the front bumper w/ license plate integration..

I'm interested in buying this gadget, got a couple of questions for you:
1. How was the installation, mostly the electrical, no computer errors?
2. Did you had to cut the plastic mesh below where the plate hides? It seems on the video that the plate hides deep into it
3. How long have you been using it?
4. You bought it from oneightynyc.com?
I have all the exact same questions! Do I have to cut the mesh? How difficult is the wiring?

This would be perfect for me because my state requires a front plate but the only time anybody hassles you about it is when you are parked on a public street or near down town. I happen to work downtown so it would be nice to be able to just flip this up whenever I park.

This. I have been running without front plates in California for 20 years, and only got a no front plate ticket once, which was in an airport parking lot.

front plates

I like that flip up plate. Been hit in So Cal several times while parked in LA by the meter maids. Then they hit you for the tint too.
Finally got tired of the inconvenience and put up my front plate on a "ghetto" tow hook. Actually got alot of compliments on it from other M owners-
just sumting different. Everyones entitled to their opinions
Rolling the dice with the M6 and no plate, but lightened the tint too.

Based off of this thread, I just had the oneightynyc plate installed by my body shop on our M235i and X5 5.0. Love it love it. We just moved to Texas from KY and I was not happy about the front plate requirement.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

It's the bomb.

Please do so, and it seems like you had no issues at all installing, how about a brief detail of the installation process please

Sorry guys, busy day.. will post pics tomorrow. The product is awesome.. i had my body shop install though so i'm not sure how they did it but they were a little nervous at first, but install was super easy for them. SOOOO happy my bumper isn't drilled! Looks awesome, works great.

Also, the guys at oneightynyc are great for helping you with install tips and they also have a youtube video on the installation

All the same questions.
My major concern is vibration and cutting to the front bumper to make it fit.

I was ready to install it, a good friend from my dealership told me better not to install it, because if they see it, they can void my warranty, so I rather not do it, sounds kind of extreme from their side, but who wants to have warranty trouble with such and expensive car?
The product seems to be of good quality, I test it using a motorcycle (12v) battery and works pretty good, also installation is super easy, but I don't want to have any trouble with my new car warranty, so I ended selling it..
here a short video I did

Actually, come to think of it, if I installed this retractable thing, I would just keep the front plate up all the time but retract it and I want to look sweetly at my car with my googly eyes.
Wow, surprised that didn't get you 10 years of tickets

Usually this is where people pull the ole, "Oh crap, I just came from the car wash/dealership/car event and forgot to put it back up"

and

it's a universal system
Has anyone here tried one on his own car?
How does the retractable plate hold-up to 3-digit speeds?

It Looks like it will be pushed into/rubbing against the front bumper once you go fast enough...
