On the horsepower saga:
The f30 platform (debut 2011) has a much improved chassis compared to the e90 platform (debut 2005). The f80 is, by dint of lightening, offering another ~18 hp through weight reduction. The area under the curve of a vehicle with 33% (33%!!!) more torque is substantial, and the f80 m3 is supposed to have 70% more torque at low rpms (i.e. 2000). This is just all sorts of new power. At this level of torque and output, a greater limiting factor is traction. It SOUNDS as if with the new chassis and stiffer diff mounting, the f80 is going to have greater traction - this means HP for HP the f80 m3 is going to accelerate more efficiently. |

And now a tangent. Been traveling a lot lately, so not on here much. How's your design show going? Are you rich and famous yet? Hope you at least have a good touchdown dance when you win. |

///Mazing!
Love them both! M3 for me. FWIW, was just thumbing through some of my e92 pics, and it still looks sexy today as it did yesterday. Last edited by Falafel Combo; 12-11-2013 at 10:41 PM.. |

Can't wait to buy the LCI M3 once that comes out and 3 years later once its on the CPO lot!!! Until then i think i'll enjoy a 2013 335is cpo FBO, N54 FTW!!!
How will this stack up against an FBO cpo X5M (price wise and performance wise)??? At least the X5M will be AWD for the north east winter duty. |

No, I hear ya. I've always had a manual trans sports car so I know where you are coming from. I spent 5-years working for Benz as an AMG Specialist and it killed me inside that there was never a manual offered. What happens if you ever hit the lottery and you want to buy an exotic? Manual trans options are almost obsolete in the super/hyper car level lol

I guess I just have more faith in GM than you. The Stingray is a good example of them doing things right. I think the ATS-V will be another.

Or buy a "used" Carrera GT. It got back publicity lately so maybe they'll be cheap!

Is-it only me??
The more I look at these, the more these M3/4 are what the M5/M6 should be: a mid-size sports sedan/coupé. The future M2 will be closer in spirit and size of what the real M3 should be IMO. Mind you, I like them. But every time I look at the latest F32 3 series, it looks waaaay to big for what a 3 series (compact sedan) should be.

IMO
E92 owner here and I also think the M3 looks better looking. I'll never own an I6 M3 (all hail the 2013 E92 M3!) but if I did It would be the M3.

Wow, the M3 looks alot better and loving those seats. The 0-60 times are suggestive of more like 450 crank hp. However, if you consider an E90 M3 MT vs an F80 M3 DCT, the weight difference isn't as much as I would have thought. Do a couple of bolt-ons to the E90 and you're almost there hp wise and if the exhaust is lightweight and put a lighter battery 70aH, you're saving another 40+ lbs and you get to enjoy all the glory of the S65 with a proper hydraulic steering setup. Makes the trading decision from an E90 a little more difficult and agree tuning the F80 to eek out reliable horsepower beyond a few laps is probably why BMW didn't come out with a higher hp number to make it seem like it was more of a jump in power vs the prior gen (for marketing purposes) and in line with competitors.
After all is said and done, think they did a fantastic job with this FI setup given the hand they're dealt in being forced to go FI. Makes me excited about BMW again, especially as the F30 3 series are so much more boring to drive vs the 3 series of 1-2 generations ago. |
