While I don't consider the GLA45 a hot hatch, I will say of the SUV's out there it is the most hatch like. Probably because it's literally just an A-Class with cladding and a raised ride height. I always forget how small and low to the ground they are. Probably a lot of fun to drive too.

The new one is not very pretty. Old ones wasn't beautiful per say, but like I said earlier does have that nice hatchback look to it. They are selling in droves though. That and the new little GLB's are everywhere, they outsell the X1/2 by double.

Yeah MB screwed the pooch with the new MY GLA45s but everything prior is money in terms of styling.

those GLA like cars are the poorest designs, no room in the back or the trunk. Just don't understand why folks buy them. I guess if you are single it's ok.

The badge. It even lights up so owners can brag even more. I will say though, I have driven a GLB (which is based on the GLA) and its not bad, really peppy and has a ton of space.

Its a strong segment, MB sold about 50k GLA and GLB's last year, which was double that of an X1 and X2 as well as the Audi Q3.

Can't even complain about the GLA/B as long as we don't get a 2nd gen of this.

that glb in the link is priced at 55k crazy!

x1 is ok for an entry level but x2 is junk. I've seen one x2 on the road. I drove x1 as a loaner and it's not worth the bmw badge.

I don't mind the looks of the GLA35 AMGs. I did cross shop that car with the Macan initially but I couldn't overlook the inline 4. The car looks smaller than the Macan but in actuality it isn't. They are the same size interior wise.

I also would take any Benz over BMW atm if it was down to the two brands.

Have always been a fan of hot hatches. Love the look of the Golf R, however in my opinion it’s lacking a bit in the HP department. I wish they would have produced the Golf R 400 concept. However, we probably would have never received it due to the fact that we have access to the Audi RS3.
The RS3 produces plenty of power, an that 5 cylinder is such a great engine, but the interior is a bit underwhelming and somewhat boring. Even some of the exterior cues are boring, but it does produce plenty of power. I would have no problem putting down 50K on a VW hatch that produces 400hp.

So 3/4-series design failure exit strategy?

(1.) Turn down the volume on the 3/4-series
(2.) Turn up the volume on the 1/2-series
(3.) 3/4-series LCI refresh with "heritage" look option
(4.) LCI 1/2-series farther away from kidney failure
(5.) Early 3/4-series redesigned platform release

Huh.

Not a bad plan if BMW can stay solvent and not permanently lose 50% of their customers in the meantime.

No room in the back? Dude it's a four door hatchback, what do you expect? Regardless, myself, my wife and 2 x 12 year olds fit perfectly fine in it all day today. Also took my son snow boarding with 2 boards in the back with 1 seat down. Plenty of room.

Illuminated front star is an option, it did on my wife's 2015 but doesn't on her 2018. 45 is smaller than the Macan and I don't think anyone was talking about the 35 which isn't even a true AMG like the 45 is. Same vein as c43 and c63 IIRC. "AMG enhanced."

Regarding the illuminated star I'm mainly talking about the base GLA 250 with no options that I typically see flaunting them, along with CLA's. That's MB's largest market to capture new buyers who value the badge with its sub $40,000 price tag, even if its not really much of a car in its base form. My local dealer when optioning their CLA and GLA's typically would option the illuminated star more so than other cars.

GLA 45 on the other hand is a whole different beast and different market.

Brings up an interesting question (maybe only for me) - the new car market has always had a large young-buyer low cost high volume set of vehicles like Civics, Corollas, Escorts, etc ... with EVs, generational change over, Uber/lyft, and other forces at play will this market segment crash?

If so, do the low-cost premium models start to disappear?

A decent optioned Corolla is 30k. While I’m not adjusting for inflation, it’s certainly not akin to be equal to the BOGO Kia days... I do believe your assertion accurate.

Dacia Spring is the new Corolla as Dacia is bringing out really really cheap electric vehicles soon.

140 (186 for urban driving) miles range but hey, might work out to and from work/store for those who have low income or don't want to spend too much money on a car as it is ~£20k

Naw it's not. It's $23,000 OTD. I just bought a manual SE in Dec. with moonroof, auto cruise control, auto high beams/HID's, lane change warning/assistant, touch screen display, sport wheels, etc.

Yup, China already has $5,000 EVs (Nio maybe? Can't remember the brand) which, of course, are extremely cheaply built and probably wouldn't be legal in any western country but the broad point is ... $5k car

As EV deliveries continue to scale and materials/parts costs continue to fall, you can see the low cost market being overrun by these more/less disposable/recyclable vehicles and/OR mobility services.

I don't understand Toyota's EV positioning - their market is reliable cars ... if all future vehicles are reliable, cheap, and recyclable where is Toyota's niche? Hyundai/Kia is gonna eat Toyota's lunch by replacing their ole-reliable value product with an emotionally-driven value product.
