Going from a 335d to a M3.

So at the moment I've got a 335D GT X Drive in Estoril Blue 2015 and don't get me wrong its a lovely car, plenty of torque, mpg etc. However recently I've been attracted to a M3 F80 in Yas Marina Blue with loads of spec and i think I'm I'm going to buy the M3!

So not ever having any experience with a M powered car before and going from a Diesel to a petrol finally i suppose my question is here - what real differences should i expect, i know MPG would be different but power wise and how the car actually handles I'm guessing the M3 would make me smile?!

I just want to make sure this is the right decision before i leap into the M power world really, lost in the diesel world i think!

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Mark from the UK!

Thankyou !

Go test drive. Bring checkbook with you. Won't regret the purchase. Just don't tell your wife about it.

Cheque book ready

Missus already knows unfortunately - she was at the dealer when i saw it.
Im guessing then the M3 is one hell of a awesome car and totally different from the diesel power I'm used too?

Thanks for the reply.

The initial power delivery would be very similar to a diesel because the M3 delivers 406 lb/ft of toque at a low 1850rpm. The difference would be at the mid to top end where the diesel would run out of steam but the m3's petrol engine would keep pulling.

Performance-wise it will be a night and day difference. It's an amazing car.

You'll feel like your 335D is a bit chintzy after driving the M. Don't get me wrong, the F3x is a good car...but the M3 is a different league in every way, even better on the "docile" side because it feels so solid and confidence inspiring.

You'll def feel like the M3 is a bargain when comparing the two..considering the price versus the daily joy you get driving it.

I drive an x5 35dand from a torque perspective it doesn't feel too much different at launch..I probably say its a bit more urgent..but where as the diesel gives u a unhesitating pull rightbat te beginning or for the next 2k rpms the m is much more urgent and continues much longer..

Yes mileage can really suck badly.ytd I had traffic n I was at 15.5l per 100

I was planning on the 435i GC, it's a nice car....

However, the day I test drove the 435i, my dealer got a M4 on the lot. I tried the M4 after the 435i..... well.... I changed my mind immediately...

It's not about diesel vs petrol.... it's about the engine output! 425HP vs 228HP, it is day and night...

Just go test drive one, you will fall in love with it!

For optimal test drive experience:

- Set your throttle to sport or sport plus, if your dealer allow you to do that. Because Sport plus will let you easily go over 4k rpm, which dealer doesn't want you to do.

- Set Suspension to Comfort (if the car has adaptive M suspension equipped), because the default Sport setting will give you a harsh ride on imperfect road.

- Set Steering to Comfort. The default sport is pretty stiff for street driving.

- Do not disable any DSC, my dealer told me one customer test drove with DSC off and the car lose grip and hit the curb.

Go figure it out by yourself, we can transfer knowledge to your on forum, but we can't transfer the real feeling!

Enjoy!

True. I've ordered a 2016 M3 in Sakhir Orange to replace my Alpine White 335i. My 8 year old son worked on my wife to get her approval on the color. She doesn't know what an M is. She just thinks I'm getting an orange 4 door.

I had a 2009 335 x-drive, purchased while living in Germany. When I was in the process of ordering that car, the dealer let me take a 335d for a 24 hour test drive. I was really impressed with the torque of that diesel and how it drove. Several months later when I picked up my 335, I was able to compare. The 335 had less torque than the diesel, but I still loved that car and got used to its acceleration and abilities on the Autobahn.

Being that was 6 years ago, my memory has probably faded some, but compared to the M3, the F80 is a completely different vehicle. Much more torque in this car, and the acceleration literally puts you back in your seat much more than any car I have owned. This is the car I have really always wanted…you will not regret the decision!

It'll be a night and day difference. The initial torque of the diesel will feel similar to the M3, but once you get past 40-50mph, the diesel is going to run out of steam and struggle to accelerate fast, whereas the M3 is going to pull strong until past 120mph.

NP mate. It will pull like none other. Probably the most practical high performance car out there. Seriously doesn't get any better.

I owned a 335d for a few months. F80's initial power delivery is similar to 335d but the lack of horse power was evident at higher speeds. I think on a day to day basis, driving within the limits of speed, the two cars are similar. But thats where the similarity ends, in my opinion. So if you dont push the limits of car/law/yourself too often, switching to M3 from 335d will only bring some incremental perceptible improvements.

F80 has an M tuned chassis, DCT, M modes, adjustability of the various dynamic settings and the sheer power - while at the same time being a very practical family car. Its a versatile car with a dual personality. 335d matches one of those personalities well, the other one - not so much.

335d is one excellent car. M3 is like two different yet excellent cars in one.

You won't regret it. I let my 4 year old pick the color.
