Yet another warranty thread...
My sincere apologies - this will be yet another thread about warranties. I'm in the market for a 2018 F80 M3 and will pick up the car late next week (hopefully). The car still has a few months left on the manufacturer's limited warranty and currently has ~20k miles.
If my intentions are to keep the car stock, would it be worthwhile to invest in an extended warranty or a crank hub replacement? I plan to keep the car for at least another three years and plan to drive it for another 36k miles or so. To clarify, keeping the car stock as in no tunes. I would consider something like the AA midpipe though. For those who care, here are the $$$ specifics. Code:
Extended Warranty: $5500 for an additional 3 years of coverage. Crank hub replacement: $3500-$5000 based on rough quotes from searching around. 2018 F80 M3 with ~20k miles. Plans are to install an AA midpipe. NO tunes or anything of that nature. Would you guys recommend an extended warranty or crank hub replacement for peace of mind? I plan to keep the car for at least three years. Last edited by tcdos; 07-22-2021 at 12:19 PM.. Reason: update warranty cost |

Crank hub replacement is unnecessary. Shop elsewhere for the warranty because that price is ridiculous.

Throw that $8500 into the market. Although many people have talked about CH issues, it's only a very small percentage of us.

Troy at FD-warranty.com. Need to get extension before original warranty expires. There are many threads here with other options as well.

I did some more shopping around and was able to find a plan for $5500 with an extra year of coverage. Would you say at that price point it is worth it are you still recommending to just save up on the side?

I drove my car for 5 years and 50K miles with all the issues ironed out by the original warranty. By the time I sold it, it just had an O2 sensor that needed to be replaced. Based off my experience and the fact you don't plan on modding it really, an extended warranty may not be needed. |

Also, some manufacturer extended warranties are actually underwritten by third parties and branded for the manufacturer. For Audi (at least at the time), their warranties were underwritten by the same aftermarket company we purchased (Fidelity). Zero difference in coverage. Same for a Lexus I had previously. Paid between 50%-60% of what dealer wanted. Also PM GOLFFRR for BMW warranties and he may be able to help you.

I sell extended warranties for a living, although I do believe in them, paying $5500 for 3 or 4 years of coverage is ridiculous unless you're high mileage 75k+.
I put half of my car payment to the side each check in savings account. If I ever need repairs or maintenance, I'll use the money saved in that account. As opposed to having your money tied up in something you may or may not use. |

damageprone mentioned that he ran into a few issues already with his exhaust cracking and leakage. I would imagine that out of pocket repair costs for those things alone would cost more than the extended warranty. With that said, do you currently have an extended warranty on your car? Also, have you had any issues so far whether it be minor or major? |

I'm out of warranty as is my brothers F80. Both of us are almost on 6 years of ownership, stock tune - no issues.
Tune would want me to have a warranty but warranties and tunes don't go hand in hand together well. Personally I'd take that money and invest it or save it. YMMV |

Exhaust was an M Performance Exhaust, which was an option. If you don't have this, you have nothing to worry about. |

If you plan to leave it stock, get an extended warranty over crankhub.
I paid "dealer cost" on mine when I bought the car, so I can't comment on the price being a fair one. I have the Mastertech Ultra (highest level for a PO car). |

For your intended use you don't even need a full crankhub solution. Just get a CBC installed by an experienced shop and you'll be all in for around $500 instead of several thousands

Anybody have American First for warranty coverage? I was quoted $3100 for 39 months of bumper to bumper coverage for my F83.
