Wet sanding gone to hell

I have the be the biggest idiot ever I found bird poop etching on my roof and for some dumb reason I decided to do a diy after watching numerous youtube videos considering my detailer didn't have an opening till may 24th the ocd kicked in and well.. started wet sanding with 3000 grit and yeah the acidy leftover came off but so did my clear coat and it seems it has hit bare metal... I didn't know what else to do so I just polished it with some meguiars m205 and left it for now... is this fixable...?

I wish I can say “that’ll buff right out” but it seems you already beat me to it.

Bare metal = repaint. Could attempt a small spot and blend attempt but no touch up paint will fix.

And are you sure that was bird poop etching? Almost looks like surface rust came through paint

So the brown part looks like oxidized metal? And the whole thing is sanded smooth?

If so, I would not mess around and get the roof repainted. Should be easy enough to spray the roof and blend it out on the a and c pillars

Well I didn't notice it till yesterday morning there was actually something on top of that orange spot it was blackish, dry and crusty in like chewing gum form I used my nails to carefully clip it off and actually got off very easily but as you can see it left me with that

Yea the surface is actually smooth can't feel anything when I put my fingernail over it I was very careful sanding it down. Im just wondering if this could have been avoided if I left it to a professional or would it have been the same outcome guess I'll have to give a call to my painter tomorrow..

M105 followed with M205 should do the trick

You had to be sanding extremely hard to burn through the clear and the base. Once the "milky" looking water stopped you were too deep in. I can't imagine the clearcoat is that thin. You could try some touch up paint and try to blend.....but I'm sure you might be too worried at this point. Get a estimate from a body shop you trust and put this to bed.....GL.....Phil

I didnt sand too hard used the recommended sand block in between and gently went in an up and down motion while always lubricated once I saw starting seeing the orangeish acid fade bare metal/primer started showing right away. At the end of the day I should have just left it and waited for my detailer lesson learned I guess, going to take a drive to brooklyn to have my paint specialist take a look at it and see what he can do.

sorry to hear that a good paint shop should be able to fix it.

a cheap but possibly effective fix would be to put one of those painted stickers to cover it up from colorx labs. Would probably look better than touch up paint.

Yikes, this definitely gets the best of us in some point in time. Good rule of thumb is always to go from least evasive to most evasive.

Hopefully a good spot paint job can do the trick.

If you sanded that area, you wouldn't have the gold spot...Im confused to what that is...

If you sanded to bare metal, it would be...metal looking, not gold.

If it was surface rust, it would have a bubbly texture in the paint as well, like...bubbles in the paint.

Oh the pitfalls of youtube and DIY...everyone is a pro.

Now it will cost you triple to have it done right. I would not attempt a blend. Remove the rails, and repaint the whole roof. done

Did I read that right. 3000 grit!!!? I would have gone with 10,000 grit. Or even polishing it first

For some odd reason the "after" picture got deleted the pic you see on my original post is what it looked like before I decided to wetsand and yes you are correct after watching about 9 youtube videos I somewhat felt all the confidence one can get only to have it all crumble down I will never do a diy for the rest of my life again...meanwhile roof will be done this week and once it has cured I now have an excuse for the wife to set up an appointment at DD to get it ceramic coated along with some work here and there
