Just got a quote from the largest Indy in Toronto, $1,172 taxes included.

I cannot get parts for under $750 so they are pocketing over $350 which is what, 3 hours or so labour.

Sound a little more respectable?

I have asked to inspect the brakes myself.

Is that all 4 discs + 4 pairs of brake pads + 2 sensors + labour?

If so, do it.

I was able to buy parts online for less than $700CAD - 4 discs, 4 pads and 2 sensors

Yeah it is, they have also agreed to me inspecting the car on a hoist to see if I feel it needs brakes and rotors or not.

Where? And confirming this includes all costs (taxes, delivery etc) and is for a 35i not 2T.

But I'm getting a sense that you're not a DYI guy, so getting prices online won't matter as much. It's what the whole package with labour that we should be concerned. And 1100 seems like a good deal, because parts alone are 700-800.

If they can do a flush for you at the same rate that'd be good. Doubt it though.

100% not a DIYer so yeah it's all in that counts but sometimes it worth sourcing parts and just having them installed.

At $750 it seems reasonable to not worry about it and let them do it all but at say $650 for parts, the labour is getting expensive.

True, but it should guide you in negotiating with them, because you'll piss them off if you source parts and only use labour, and also you lose warranty. Sometimes the warranty alone is worth it to just hand the keys and let them do the job.

I 100% agree the parts should come close to what they're quoting you though, again.

While I understand how brake pads may exhibit different properties (less or more initial bite, less or more wear and dust), it seems a rotor (unless ceramic), is just a machined steel disk. Provided it's true, any brand would work the same. Someone above mentioned Centric brand which has a good reputation. They are not expensive and of good quality. While not a BMW, my Volvo was hell on rear brakes due to rust. Over the years, I tried expensive rotors (OE and Brembo) and cheaper no-name ones. Guess what, they all performed the same and all rusted at the same rate. So hence my skepticism about the value of pricey brake parts.

Different steel used in different rotors, giving different wear rates/other properties.

Like saying paint is paint (or any other real world example)...

It all rust though :-)

Machined cast iron disk. Exact ratios, impurities, casting method (lots of different ways to do this), etc. of the iron can all play a factor. As well as any internal ventilation designs, etc.

That said, I agree with you, they are all certainly damned similar and often you are just paying extra for a name.
