Depending on your driving conditions, I wouldn't discount a 440i for a M4 right away. Why am I making this comment? Because I own both (435i and M3). There are definitely times when I wish I were driving the 435i than the M3, and vice versa.

The DCT in F8x is quite jerky in low gears which can get annoying if you are constantly in bumper to bumper traffic. Also, F8x's throttle needs to be feathered off the line to not overpower the rear, and it can sometimes gives an unsatisfying experience. Where F8x shines is any time after take off. The car is much more solid than 435/440i, corners way better, and accelerates to 100MPH in a blink of a second. The DCT shifts are insanely fast and satisfying.

In bumper-to-bumper traffic, I'd rather be saving money and driving a 435i for more comfort and a smoother ZF8 transmission. So you have to decide what's best for you for your driving conditions.

You'll be fine. Its pretty quick to get used to. Just drive first 100 miles or so in efficient mode keeping DSC on to get used to it and change modes as you get more comfortable with it. I drove from AZ to CA in heavy rain the night I got it and I was completely fine. I came from a 335i with a JB4 and love the bump in power over the n54/n55 platform. I haven't taken DSC off yet to push it and may not do so for a while. Planning on doing the one day M school in one month; maybe I'll gain some more confidence after that!
