And BTW I don't mean; "we should all agree". What I mean is that when someone takes a stand on principles - those same principles should apply regardless of who violated them. Otherwise it's just tribalism masquerading as moral superiority. And that dynamic is getting worse rapidly on both sides of the political spectrum and in society in general.

I used to talk politics with people and it'd be: (1.) What are we trying to solve? <- 99.9% general agreement (2.) What's the right outcome? <- maybe some politics here (3.) How and who should get us to that outcome? <- all the politics is here Now it's: (1.) What does Trump say the truth is? <- 100% of politics here Thus a complete loss of principled civics discussions on any topic. |

Saw this the other day and thought of our watches discussion - especially with GrussGott
Pretty funny/quirky (and mostly accurate) run down of the "7 levels of luxury watches". A Lange and Patek both show up where you'd expect. Good entry level choices also.

The final paragraph in this week’s lead story in The Economist is worth reading a few times;
“America’s unique willingness to lead by fusing power and legitimacy brought on the end of the Soviet Union and carried it to hegemony. The world order it engineered is the vehicle for that philosophy. But Mr Trump prefers to fall back on the old idea that might is right. His impulses may begin to impose a new geopolitics, but they will not serve America or the world for long. Remember the words of Henry Kissinger: order cannot simply be ordained; to be enduring, it must be accepted as just” The executive order tariffs against Canada (and others) are only constitutional if they represent action against a national security threat. That is the specific narrow power given to the Executive Branch when acting unilaterally. When challenged on what specific national security threat Canada represents, the response was; “well, there was that war in 1812”. Canada has stood beside the USA in virtually every conflict of the last 150 years. The only exceptions are Vietnam and Iraq #2. In WW2 there were one million Canadian volunteers from a country (that was then) 7 million in size. The Canadian aluminum industry was originally developed as a national security must for the US - and the main concession that Canada has given to NAFTA is guaranteed access to Canada’s strategic natural resources exclusively for the US if it became strategically necessary. With threat of this guarantee being blown up by the end of NAFTA - guess who’s seeking a new agreements for preferential access? China - as they are in Africa and the Middle East. On Aluminum, Natural Gas, Oil, Copper, Cobalt (batteries), rare earth materials and fresh water (Of which Canada has gobs and gobs) When the second Iraq war started, Canada supported it by taking the lead position in Afghanistan so the US could pull resources to Iraq. They played this lead role for about three years -taking hundreds of casualties because.... 9-11 and a national understanding that anybody that picks a fight with the USA fucking picks a fight with Canada. Let’s not get into the Iranian hostage crisis and the role Canada played getting Americans out of Iran. This video shows how Canada celebrated its Afghanistan war dead. In the 100 mile drive from the Air Force base where the bodies landed - to the national morgue in Toronto - 10s of thousands of citizens, veterans, police, etc lined up on the road and bridges to pay respect. All because of 9-11 and the centuries long brotherly bond between Canada and the US. But hey... the Steel tariffs apparently have created 300 steel jobs and... Canada is a national security threat.

We know this went to shit and soon it'll show on your 401k's but the mass panic is not yet here. I just talked with a friend who's driving by a few distribution center parking lots and they were empty. Nobody showed up to work today. Today being the day eight of the tariffs. But I'm sure this will be fine. Canada will turn to china in a new York minute and that'll save the maga jobs even more. Maga mofos!

<phone rings - SSOTTII picks it up> hello?
<myzmak> ummmm.....hello. <SSOTTII - Silence> ... its, uh...well, yeah, i guess its been a while..... I'm sorry - but I've been busy. You know, trial and stuff...... <SSOTTII - continued silence> ... <myzmak> anyway, how have you been? ----- Anyway, so, yeah, trial part II is now done. four month fucking trial. god. what a grind. anyway, allow me to summarize where we're at: - trump continues to do trump things. Too many to name but on today's plate we have rejecting his G7 allies and ditching them in quebec to go hang out with rocket man - ontario has now elected former crack-smoking mayor Rob Ford's older, drug dealing and serial lying populist brother as its premier - summer is here anything i missed? Anyway, on bigger news: I actually finished the trial a week ago, just got the fuck out of town and went to Quebec City and Montreal with the fam. man, i love montreal. easily the best city in canada (outside of winter). likely one of the best in north america too (have a soft spot for chicago but....MTL would come close) how y'all doing?

I'm going through an other circle of hell. I unloaded to the politics ot instead of here because trump actually saved the day. http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...45584&page=110 The whole story is there. Anyway. I've seen her walking past my home twice today (or I think) so I'm pretty sure she actually is attempting a suicide assisted by my wrath. How's the kids and Ruby? I'm assuming the wife is well because well, she is after all married to the one cool Canadian nobody outside of the ssott has heard of! Good having you back! Now, let's talk tariffs.

long time from now. We'll spend the next few months preparing and exchanging lengthy written arguments summarizing teh 4 month trial; we'll do a final oral argument in october (was supposed to be september, but my partner had another trial set down so we had to push back)
likely won't know until....Q1 or Q2 of 2019. Quote:

as for tariffs.....what is there to say? Seems Trump wants american consumers to pay more for stuff. for.....reasons. once again, you elect a man without the slightest idea how things work to president and, guess what? you get stupid policies. in this case, he will punish all the people that voted for him by increasing the costs of their consumer goods AND by inviting targeted sanctions back from Canada and EU that are directed right at his supporters. I would say it is 'lose lose' BUT then I would be ignoring the massive damage he is doing to america's long standing international relationships, so really it is lose-lose-lose. oddly enough, once again, the only person who might benefit from any of this is putin, holder of the pee-pee tapes.

I understand trade agreements as something that takes away industries and jobs and everything goes to shit. I still hold many beliefs I had while I wrote the epic paper on EU and how our cows will have less time with the farmer. As I've said here multiple times it was a groundbreaking research! That's what I think about each and everyone of those and that's my default position in trade in general. I actually have to stop and think for like 2 seconds every time those are the topic to get over the resentment and to get back to a more educated view. It's always those bloody cows without the nurturing care of their masters that make me think so and only after years of actually paying attention to this shit have I learned that I might have been a bit wrong in 1993. Spending more than five seconds on the topic shows exactly how badly I was wrong. There is not one trade deal that's been marketed well to the public. I can't recall any effort anywhere to actually inform vast masses of people about how trade actually works. All we ever get is the populist shit spewed by people with an agenda that'll be harmful to everyone. So basically we got trump and palls because we select idiots to our governments. They might be smart enough to get elected and they might be smart enough to spend years and years drafting the agreements but then they forget to explain the big picture to the voters in simple ways and we always end up back to this shit. The default view pushes through. Don't get me wrong, I still absolutely think cow petting time for a farmer was cut short by the EU and the more industrial way of producing milk and that's bad but thank god Anna at the age of eleven didn't have a vote to cast in the matter. I would also like to point out that a liter of milk costs here now 67cents. That means that the price of milk has stayed steady for 25 years since I remember being absolutely enraged when I realized a liter of petrol and a liter of milk cost the same in 1993. I suggested my dad he should stop driving. No matter what trump does we will be back in this point again if people don't get told what these deals give us and what the long term benefits are. It's either that or reading more stupidity about Canada ripping off the world.

I am not one to be at all into the cult of TV celebrities and would only be a 'maybe' on braking if, say, a kardashian or someone from duck dynasty or honey boo boo were in front of my car BUT....Bourdain i always really liked. I think i picked up kitchen confidential in 2001 and have been a major fan ever since. i cant claim any originality there and admit my reasons are probably like those of most other folks: he was a fucking good writer, he was smart and insightful and he emphasized getting the fuck out of what you know and are comfortable with. likewise, again as has been said by others, in an era where narrow, inward thinking morons are on the rise (See Trump, Donald J or....half the political parties in europe) an unashamed globalist who went everywhere, hung out with regular folks and tried to figure out what we all have in common well.....that was a lot fucking closer to how i see, experience and appreciate the world than someone like cheeto jesus who only sees what divides us. i think bourdain really was one of the good guys and one of the rare folks on TV these days worth watching or listening to and i think we are a bit worse for losing him. anyway, yeah. it is bumming me out more than a little bit.
