Single use oil drain plug

I just read that BMW recommends replacing the oil drain plug on the M series after every oil change. Is that really necessary?

Depends on year of your car see below:

"BMW has changed the oil drain plug on US spec F82s starting in the September 2014 production month.
If your US spec F82 was built in September 2014 or later, you have a steel 17mm socket drain plug (11137535106) and you only need to replace the copper gasket (07119963132) when you perform an oil change.

For US spec F82s produced before September 2014, you will need to replace your aluminum drain plug (11117849396) every time you perform an oil change, this plug requires a hex/allen key (not sure of size)."

Magnesium oil pans were phased out, unless you have an early model 2015 f8x, aluminum drain plug from the magnesium, then you don't need to

CS models Still have the magnesium oil pan I think. My service report showed a new drain plug and gasket after oil change.

Much appreciated James, had to read your post again to remember I have the steel drain plug, and only require the crush washer and about 7 quarts of the good stuff.

17mm with Crush Washer reused many of times. I usually replace after 3x oil changes due to threads and risk of stripping.

Why is the hex drain plug single use is it because it comes with magnesium pan?

I'm going to start doing this on the same-ish interval. drain plugs are like $3. Its silly not to treat this as a semi-consumable for just a little more peace of mind.

It does not make any sense to change the 17hex drain plug in aluminum oil pan with steel plug, because before you damage the thread of the pan than the one of the steel plug.

The important thing is not to apply more force than necessary.
