Running on full E85 dumps in a ton of fuel even for street driving, so fuel dilution is a major issue. As a result, only use a 40 weight with a high HTHS and LL-01 spec. Cheaper LL-01 oils have a minimum level of HTHS required to meet LL-01 (3.5). Xcess does a bit better with HTHS of 3.7, so you have a bit more protection for the money.

Full E85 in Socal is roughly E70. I’ve never seen it go beyond that.

Mine was done as per schedule and it says 17,000km to the next change
Having seen how straightforward the oil and filter is to change I was going to do a change now as it's 11,000 Km since last one Would Castrol Edge 05W30 M suffice? I know it's not LL04 but give how quickly it will be changed soon I think be good. I'm in Dublin Ireland. And 95 octane unleaded is the only petrol available Thanks |

P.S. It shows that Castrol Edge 5w30 M is LL-04 approved on their site.

From memory Shell V power which is 98 hasn't been sold in Republic of Ireland for years. But is widely available in UK. When I bough my the Castrol edge 5w30 I saw LL-04 on the can. Thanks |

If running Motul Sport 5W40 for 12 months, is it acceptable to continue running the same oil, with an oil change obviously, or do folks cycle between oil types? I was thinking perhaps switching to Motul Excess2 5W40 or Redline 5W40 for this coming year instead continuing with Sport 5W40 as it's not as widely available this year it seems. |

I was about to do a change to Amsoil 5-40 Euro from Castrol 5-40 Euro for a track event in late Feb at VIR. Redline in the past 12-15 years ago had made my engines feel noisier and more "loose". Been using Amsoil since until this thread I switched to Castrol 5-40 because $.

Why not a higher weight Redline option for track months and something like 0w30 or 40 for fall/winter?

Yeah, regarding winter months, the 0w may make some sense, though anymore our winters here in South Jersey have been pretty mild that I don't feel super-compelled to go that route. The car also sits in a garage overnight. |

The newest LL-01 on the block is Castrol Euro 0W-30.
HTHS of 3.5, pour point of -60 indicates Group IV base stock. I am likely going to give this one a go on my next OCI. https://www.amazon.com/Castrol-06244...s%2C142&sr=8-3

I have an F10 with an N63 TU engine. The engine was replaced by bmw last year with the long block version and has 30k km on it. This engine runs hot. BMW calls for LL01 0W30. Since the engine burns oil and has valve stem issues people have noted success of reduced oil consumption moving to xW40.
Engine is under warranty for 1 more year. A number of the oils mentioned in this thread cost about the same for me in Canada (motul, penzoil, etc). This thread has been useful though any advice for my specific situation would be helpful. 1) while under warranty should I still use bmw oil? 2) should I switch to a heavier oil xW40-50 and should it be different between summer and winter. 3) If using non-bmw oil should I use motul 8100 xcess gen2 or penzoil plat euro or valvoline (seem to be the most recommended here). Sounds like I should stay away from lm. Any other recs would be helpful. I plan to change oil every 5k km. Drive normally but a bit spirited on the street and typically 20-30% over the speed limit on the highway. I might drive 5k km per year. Much appreciate your help. Question here. For the S55, I daily drive the car about 7-8 months of the year when it’s warm enough (short trips, long trips and everything in between) in southern Ontario, Canada. It’s stored away for winter for the other 4 months. Currently running BMW TPT 0W30. I haven’t tracked the car yet, but if I was planning to add 1-2 track days during the summer, should I run Castrol 0W-30, Motul Xcess Gen 2 5W-40 or Platinum Pennzoil 5W-40? I’m guessing Castrol 0W-40 is out now given the new formula/change in 2022?
It’s worth noting that I do have a lot of short trips to the gym, I try to get the oil temps up as much as I can during these trips. |

With that said, I’d run Motul during the summer at the track and 0w-30 Castrol Euro during the colder months where you are. I live in a warm climate so I run Motul Gen 2 year round. Nothing against Pennzoil, but Castrol 0w-30 Euro is the best LL-01 in a 30 weight right now.

I have been thinking about this more and reading up.
On Castrol 0W30, yes it is good but I can’t find it anywhere under $16-20/litre. That’s expensive. I don’t know if they have been giving stock to BMW given the contract but if you want a 0W30 then BMW oil might be the only one for now. I have been looking at Motul X-Cess gen 2 and X-Clean Gen 2 and have these comments (would like to peoples’ thoughts): - X-cess is LL01 and X-Clean is LL04 - XClean is a better rated oil with a better base /tbn than xcess. XClean has more stringent vw, Porsche, and MB approvals - XClean is lower SAPs which should be good for reducing residue. Since the LL04 standard has been put out there, North American gas has reduced sulfur in gas making a LL04 a good choice. Though running a low SAPs with high sulfur fuel would require more frequent oil changes, which most do here anyway. - XClean has better oxidation properties For those that can run a 5W40 XClean gen2 might be better. edycol Would like to get your view on this since I am just venturing in this space. Thanks. |
