Macan Turbo vs. M3

So, I recently placed an order for an M3 which is scheduled to arrive in Nov. While I am very excited to finally own an M3, the fact that it will be my only vehicle is giving me a pause. I live in NJ and last winter was just brutal. Of course that thought did cross my mind when I placed the order, but lets just say I was heavily influenced by the test drive.
Then I saw a Macan on the road the other day and surprisingly impressed by it's design. Certainly not as aggressive as the M3 but it has smooth curvy lines which I prefer to sharp angular lines in many cars today. The fact that my wife likes it is a plus as well. Has anyone here driven one? M3 hands down is the more exciting car but would I regret come winter time? Thx

People seem to get by with the M3 all year as their only vehicle but it's a PIA in the snow especially where we are. Like you said last year sucked and this year who knows.

Do you guys have another car in the house that is better equipped for it? You could get a set of snows and it will be a big difference but if your wife has to drive it, man....idk that just me I know I wouldn't place my wife or kids behind the wheel of a RWD sports car making over 400 ft lbs of torque and power in the snow.

Another car in the house better suited for snow duty is ideal.

Macan looks great, it's the car designed to increase Porsche's percentage of female buyers, which is near zilch. Like the Evoque, looks great but rather domestic.

I daily drive one. It's the best all-around vehicle I've ever owned.

Also, not that it matters, but since it was brought up, almost every owner on the Macan forum that I'm register to is male.

Some thoughts from an experienced M3 owner in a snowy climate. I've got about 150k miles in M3s over the last 11 years, all driven year round including I'd guess 60+k miles in winter months. Never got stuck once including taking my E90 to go skiing in the mountains here, even during snow storms (in Colo.) They are remarkably capable cars and very competent in the snow with the right equipment (tires) and mentality. You have to get used a little more slip from a start, but that is really the only difference between a RWD and AWD/4WD car - traction while accelerating. I know you are coming off a seriously bad winter in NJ but don't let snow keep you from an M3.

That said, I recently drove a Macan S and was blown away. The car just felt like such a fantastic package, loved everything except the braking (which I felt was a bit of a weak spot.) It isn't a sports car per se and even the Turbo 3.6 won't be nearly as fast as an M3, but it is impressive nonetheless. I really like the styling and found the cabin fit like a glove (I am 6'3"). A real Swiss army knife kind of a car. I've heard endless chick car comments like above but I think that's nonsense.

Whatever you choose you can be confident you'll be getting a great car.

If you'd like to drive something like an M4 but have a problem with the winters, I'd like to know why you don't consider an RS5 as an option instead of the Macan, or even an S6/S7. Just sayin, cause that's what I would do!

In case you have'nt seen it :

BK9731 if you decide to stick with the M3, you should order the winter tire package (or something similar) from your dealer soon as it is expected to take 4-6 weeks to be delivered. I also live in NJ (northern) and I recently placed my order for the wheels/tires. I will only be driving in light snow (if I can help it) as I can work from home if its severe or borrow the wife's SUV.

In efficient mode, the M3 can be driven in a very civilized manner manner. Add in snow tires and maybe some weight in the trunk, and I think (hope) we should be fine.

Thanks for the inputs. I am pretty much set on M3 at this point, just needed some reassurance concerning the winter usability. RS5 won't work because I need the back seats (will be my only car). S6/7 are nice but felt "soft" and big, also new face lift is due soon. Macan Turbo is still intriguing, I agree it's not a chick car though it did catch my wife's attention which is very hard to do!

The Macan turbo is still an SUV at the end of the day. SUV's will never be a sedan or coupe. I don't want to get off topic, but the next steps I will take will be a Cayman GT4 as I want a dedicated track car and a Cayenne Turbo, which will have the power and the ability to load a lot of stuff in the back. The Macan is nice, but it is very small compared to the Cayenne and if it is the only car that you will own it will be perfect, otherwise it will be compromised. If you choose to keep the M, have a dedicated track car like the Cayman GT4 and a dedicated SUV and this would be ideal.

I own a Macan Turbo and traded in a '13 Cayenne GTS for it. The Macan is essentially the same width, 3" lower in the rear and 6" shorter in the back end. To say it is "very small compared to the Cayenne" is totally false. It's smaller, but not by much, especially not where people sit. Most people that walk up to think its a Cayenne. That's how close they are in size. Also, it runs 12.9 @ 106, which for a lightweight SUV that can actually handle very well, is impressive.

I personally would never get a Macan, but I'm sure it's a great complement to a Viper. I think an SVT Raptor would be an even better complement, but to each his own. must be an awesome garage.

Last winter in my e92 M3 wasn't bad at all on dedicated snows! The ground clearance is annoying at times but it's still manageable.

I got caught in a freak, instant ice storm and kept it on the road while SUV's galore were in the ditch (although that could be more driver skill/attention than vehicle).

Overall, I like the Macan, too but I'm looking to go with the F80 or new C63 for my next car; both RWD. So I echo everyone else and say go for the M!

BTW, if the new RS5 comes out this decade I'd consider it too but it still seems very far off in development.

Thanks, bro. The Macan compliments my dedicated sports cars very well, and honestly is the best all-around vehicle I've ever had. It does everything well.

I've personally never been a fan of the Raptor. They're definitely popular, a lot of guys I work with have them, but I don't see the appeal at all. Back when I needed a truck (a completely different thing than a sports SUV that laps the ring in 8:15), I picked up a 5.7L Tundra. But as you said, to each his own.

I don't lease, but I've heard BMW has great lease rates.

Agreed. Or a 3/4 ton Ram Power Wagon. That said, can't beat a Land Cruiser as an all round unstoppable utility vehicle. Love mine.

For the most part, except for a few programs Porsche throws out here/there. Most recent being a great short term Carrera lease.

Other than that, Porsche typically don't lease out that good.

The M3 will be fine in the winter with proper winter tires. I've been driving RWD BMWs through the winters in CT for many years and never had any problems as long as I had the snows on. Plus they are so fun to slide around in the snow!

Can't stress this enough though - you need proper winter tires or you'll be in for a wild ride. The rubber makes all the difference.
