If there is one thing we learned from Edward Snowden, it is that nothing is unhackable.

It will be just a matter of time.

I guess BMS will be getting a huge boost in business soon as they roll out the G Platform.

If people can still manage to jailbreak iPhones these days despite Apple's constant efforts to put an end to it I'm sure the ECU can still be cracked. Just need to find the right people for the job. They used to say the same thing about the "uncrackable" Toyota ECU's in the ISF I had. It took them 9 years to figure out how to crack that thing... It'll happen eventually, just need to be patient

I guess the real question is is it worth it for tuners and end users. Time and money will remedy anything, but if it really takes, for example “ 9 years,” that’s going to be on a new generation already. What did they ISF community do once the tunes were available? I’m curious to know as I had a heavily modified IS300 in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Once it was cracked superchargers, built motors, and E85 really started to take off. They might even be onto turbo setups now but idk I haven't checked in on those forums in awhile. It's about $15k for the 650 whp supercharger kit with all supporting fueling/cooling mods which is nuts. I think the best people are running at the strip is mid 10's and in the 1/2 mile I believe they're trapping right around 170 mph

I use to be part of the Lexus community. The tune they have is just straight trash.

$800 for 20 horsepower to the crank.

Yeah I agree it's a complete waste of money. But there was high demand for it since everyone wanted to be able to compete with new American cars and such. So hopefully eventually someone can crack the new BMW ECU's. The demand should be high because there's so much performance left on the table. I'm pretty sure I saw a dyno of an E30 X3M with stock downpipes making more power than a FBO E85 M3

The F80's just shot up in value since they can be tuned

Peeps are going to be looking for tuning car and not a strapped car.

Maybe.

But there needs to be a return on investment.

I can guarentee most won't fork out 3K for a tune.

That's more due to the fact that most Lexus cars are N/A. N/A cars generate very little power (if any) with a tune. You can't just turn up the turbo boost. It's also why it took 9 yrs for a tune - probably very low demand as most people knew it wouldn't magically add 50 hp and 50 ft/lb torque.

The original tuner actually saw about 20 whp and wtq in stock form and up to 50 whp and wtq with FBO. There actually was a good amount of demand for it. But to be fair the demand probably wasn't high enough to attract companies to enter the scene. My main point is just those ECUs have a reputation of being "uncrackable" and they were still cracked. So hopefully it can happen on the new generation of BMW ECUs

So that BMW can sell more of their own ridiculously overpriced tune in the name of CSL?

Right now over on the MBforums - they just cracked the TCU on the W212 E63 M157. Before those guys would only be able to tune the ECU and the TCU would limit the power so the F10 M5 would always beat a higher HP MB M157 because of the TCU. Now this year with the help of like 4 different tuners - they were able to unlock the TCU for those cars and they're going into the 9's with just tune on the ECU/TCU. Before they would only hit the low 10's with highly modded cars.

10/9s at that point does it really even matter? Its crazy what modern cars can do with a tune and some slicks.

Inevitable now that cars (especially BMWs) are so homogenized. When you put the same engine in multiple cars, tuning the car is literally all a manufacturer can do at a consumer facing level to sell it as a different trim level. Just look at modern AMG cars, they almost all have the same turbo v8 with different tunes - great for manufacturing, but no character and completely homogenized across the range.

I'm honestly more pissed BMW shutdown newtis - but that's the Company now, will do anything to keep control and squeeze the pennies.

The MK4 (A80) Supra had a virtually 'uncrackable' ECU. So what! Enthusiasts with new BMWs will have to maybe look at standalones again, like we did in the olden days of japanese performance
I can totally understand BMWs thinking. They want to control the develop of performance with their engines. Their dealers probably won't be burdened with as many shady warranty claims anymore either.

They've already unlocked the ECU for S58 engines in the X3 ///M ... it's only a matter of time.

2 things:

1. 2021 are now just starting to hit lots. 2020s were at EOP right before the lockdowns and the DME transition started in June.

2. A change to DMEs doesn't happen in one day in global supply chain. It will likely be a phased implementation based on the factories that have the lowest current supply, that's why it effects certain models built in June but not others, and then some others in July, then some more in August, then eventually the US factory.

Ah I remember I had to buy an HKS FCON VPro back in 2004 for one of my project cars. I helped my tuner for the wiring. Never again

You were a relative sophisticate back then. A lot of enthusiasts (especially Supra guys like me) were happy if they were able to get their hands on the S-AFC/VPC combo which was the 'holy grail' for a while
