F80 M3 High Oil Consumption
For those of you that have F8X M's, how often are you topping up with Oil.
A week after I got the car I got a low oil warning and had a liter put in. +-5000Km later and the warning has come back on. This is the first car that I've ever had to top up with oil between services... |

In the past two years of ownership, I never had to add oil to the car. I regularly check the oil level on iDrive as well and it always show full. The car is daily driven and also sees regular track days as well. Just standard interval oil changes...

I change the oil every 5k miles and have never seen the oil indicator gauge budge lower than full. I drive it pretty enthusiastically regularly. Not sure if that helps.

If it's not a leak and it's less than a liter per 1,000 miles or so, the dealer will most likely consider it normal usage. It's not what we want to hear, but it's their usual stance.

No oil warnings between oil changes (usually about 8k), and assuming you believe the electronic dipstick, almost no oil burned.
Cheers

12k+ miles and 3 oil changes (includes 1200 mile service) and I have never needed to top off the oil. '17 F80 ZCP

the more it's revved the more oil it will consume also with elevated boost it will consume more oil due to higher crank case pressure and blow by. mine gets driven hard daily and uses about 1L every 12000km. It's healthy oil consumption |

It’s odd to see the contrasting results between cars. I drive mine about 110km a day one week on and one week off (I alternate between cars).
During the week it’s driving miss daisy driving to work. Fridays and Weekends it’s spirited driving. I have only done two events in it so far. A Track event and and a drag event. |

It's funny this thread popped up today. I was going to search if anyone else was running into this. Mine just alerted it needs a quart of oil and it was just serviced in December. It's daily driven pretty hard with BPM stage 1 tune.

33k miles never drank oil. X5M drinks a quart every 4K or so.

Again I reckon the harder it driven it will consume oil.
1L every 10000km is not allot, my m135i was the same. drive it nicely and dont rev it wont consume Oil unless off course if something is broken. run a Comp test and leak down and see if all cylinders are all ok. but as one of the posters mentioned BMW will tell that 500ml every 1000km is well within spec. |

Same experience for me. I have over 60k miles in the F80. I get all of the scheduled oil changes, track my car several times per year, and not once have I ever had to top off oil (whereas it was a regular occurrence on my E93)...

While I am not an experienced engine builder, based on what I have been told by those who are, another variable that can affect oil consumption is the engine break-in process that was used and how effective it was executed. IIRC, how well the piston rings seal during the engine break-in process directly contributes to how much oil the engine may burn in the future following the break-in. The break-in guidance in the manual (which is designed for both the engine and drive train break-in) is easy to follow and very general. But there will still be some variability with how people execute it since we are all different and live/drive in different environments.
After doing a little bit of research on this topic, I decided to break-in my engine on a chassis dyno right after purchase using a procedure from an experienced engine builder. Was it absolutely necessary? Probably not. Was it overkill? Maybe. But it was easy enough for me to do in an effort to have as healthy an engine as possible. That said, I would say that I don't drive my car too "hard" on the street (but that can be very subjective as well) - but I drive it in Sport+ all of the time, attempt to rev match on a regular basis and don't mind "getting into it" on on/off ramps, etc. My engine is all stock (other than some drop in filters and the BMS Oil Catch Can) and I have never tracked it (but I will some time in the future ).
