I have this same question for OP. It's so confusing to read his post -- what does rev match have to do with ZCP?

Also to OP:
I've been reading that the "car was made for the SMG/DCT/ZF" since the E46.
I have yet to drive a car, any car, where the experience is not elevated by the 6MT. The DCT will be somewhat faster, but most of the time it's irrelevant.
I've also been reading about the people who convert to DCT from 6MT and never get it. They clearly weren't that into the 6MT to begin with.

Specifically for a dedicated track car, I prefer DCT because although you miss out on some 6MT fun, you also miss out on the possibility of a money shift

I have an E90 DCT and an E92 6MT, the E92 is more fun 10 out of 10 times. Both M4 GTSs are DCT as that's the only option and also there are dedicated to the track.

I miss my E90 manual. My F83 DCT is faster but manual 100% if I were to go back in time.

I had a 2016 6mt non comp until I got beat by a dct with the same mods lol. It is very hard to outshift that transmission. Plus I got married and agreed to buy a dct so the wife could drive it. Dct is superior in so many ways and imho faster because it shifts so fast. But you can never replace the feeling of a third pedal.

If I had to do it again I think I would choose a dct bc of daily traffic and the convenience of relaxing after 12 hour work days.

I completely get what you're saying - the 6MT F8X feels more like a momentum car at this point rather than all out speed demon.

A few years ago, it did feel unbelievably fast but after getting used to it and having been in much faster cars I've got to admit that the driving experience has become way more important to me because it does sorta feel (relatively) slow.

This same exact thing happened to me many years ago with the E36 M3… at the time (2005-2007) I remember thinking, "This is as fast as I'll ever need to go in a car. Why is this car so fast!!" but after a while, and certainly now, I think of that car as a very slow but very fun car.

Update: I bought 2018 6MT comp and don’t regret it.

Thankfully a 2017 DCT comp popped up in the same city the day before I was planning to purchase, so I was able to drive them back to back.

I think what convinced me was akin to that “more fun 90-95% of the time comment”. While it was fun to chirp the tires on the DCT between 1st and 2nd, and again from 2nd to third, I thought - how often am I going to be doing this, as I don’t have a habit of driving like a jacka$$ on public roads.

And there is something nice about having the last year of the f80 in a 6MT comp.

As to the question about rev matching - as a previous post mentioned - maybe it was coded out of the m4 I drove, as I drove it in all settings. A year ago I didn’t know that sport+ didn’t rev-match, so perhaps I drove the two cars in different settings…who knows.

Thanks again for the input. Time to dive into research on the carbon fiber accessories!

As others have said it comes down to personal opinion. I really enjoyed the DCT cars at the BMW performance driving school however when it came time to purchase my F80 100% it was going to be a manual. The manual actually makes my boring 7 mile suburban commute enjoyable. Either way its an incredible car. Best of luck with your purchase.

Both are great choices.

I’ve missed a manual on occasion with SMGs/DCTs.
But I almost never miss an automatic with a manual even though I’m much slower.

On a track the DCT is much nicer if you really really wanna move but I like honing my skills with the manual.

Both are great fun in a slightly different way and it does corn to personal choice.

Usually comfort and sport in a manual are rev matched. And sport plus is free revving. I like the upshifts and sound with MPE with rev matching. But I usually drive in sport plus. Again, it’s personal preference.

I went through the exact same dilemma when I was looking for a '18 M3. I finally opted for the 6MT Comp. Even though the DCT Comp certainly felt and is faster, something just felt better all around with the 6MT. Mine is also a daily driver and I have never thought I made the wrong decision.

My $0.02. I had an OG M2 with DCT. Loved the car, but had zero connection with it. When I had to chance I swapped to an '18 M4 6MT and never looked back. Sure I was waayyyyy faster off the line in the M2, but the engagement of actually driving the M4 satisfies much more.

What exactly are you comparing this against when you say much faster cars? I'm curious.

Mainly the M5 Comp, which can make most cars seem pedestrian. I also get to use the M8 regularly for work and so it's reshuffled how I view the M4's speed.

Most recently, I was in Zurich for work and while I was there I was given an Audi RS6 to get around. I was genuinely alarmed at how quick that hearse is.

And lastly, my father-in-law has let me drive his 992 Turbo S Cabriolet quite a few times… I have no clue why a convertible needs to be that fast but it is. Admittedly, with the top down it probably made the speed seem somewhat exaggerated but I've never had to look farther ahead down the road in any other car.

**The M4 is still fast but it's just that I'm in a M8 almost everyday so it's changed my perception of what feels fast

Good choice on the manual.

As another member made a comment on the rubbery feel of the shifts, get yourself a SSK by Ron- Autosolutions to make the experience much more tactile and precise.

I had a 335i FBO before my f80 and the f80 pulling on the highway, while definitely fast, didn't feel like anything super special. However, pushing it on a curvey road still scares me.

If you can, get some time with a HPDE track day with an instructor. Let them drive your car in the first session after you get a few laps in.

It's the best possible way to understand just how far the limits on these cars really are, and then you can hone those skills on the track. That will help to inform your canyon runs at no more than 70%.

Agree, though I would love to find an instructor who owns his own F8X, because no way in hell am I letting someone else drive my car on the track.

No matter how good their skills are relative to mine, I just don't have that level of trust.
