Thinking about going back to an E92 M3
Some might call me crazy but I am seriously considering trading my 2015 m4 for a low Mileage E92. I've owned my M4 for over a year now and I find myself missing my M3 more and more each month. I know many E9x owners complained about lack of torque but IMO it forced you to drive the car.
Any E9x charged owner ever encounter a F8x? If so, what was the outcome? Anyone think I'm crazy for thinking this? Things I miss about my old E92 - The noise - Steering feel - Steering feedback - Motor has more character than the s55 Here's a few pics of my m4 and old e92 [IMG][/IMG] [IMG[/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

You're not the first & definitely won't be the last.
You echo some of the members here who have cited similar reasons...just off the top of my head: 8600RPM JYTsky AWM3ME2 Its nice to have choices. Do what makes you happy.

Having thoughts about trading in for an M4. I still love my '13 ZCP. If ur car was any other color I might actually have thought about trading with you. But SO is not my favorite color.

Was your E92 a 6MT and is your F80 a DCT? Manuals are definitely more involving than DCT, but DCT are faster and easier to drive if speed and convenience are what you want.

Thx for posting your comments; the M4 is a pretty car, but like you I enjoy the fact that the NA E92 M3 "forces" you to "drive" the car. I purchased one of the last generation NA 911's (991) and wouldn't swap it for the new turbo 991 either. I have nothing against forced induction, there is probably a Harrop SC in my near future for my E92 M3. One of the best, IMHO, car journalists out there recently tweeted on the new turbocharged 991, and his comments echo yours when comparing turbo to NA:
There should be a car out there for you with low miles, and CPO warranty. |

The only thing your crazy for is leaving the s65 team!! One of my neighbors has a YMB m4 and the other has a SO m3 every time they drive by and I hear that sad turbo I just shake my head in disappointment they've both suggested we trade cars for a day but I politely declined.

The f8x is a wonderful car and I would love to own it one day. But never at the expense of my e92. I had a chance to get the f8x...twice, but both times still chose the e9x.
While you aren't alone in your decision to go back to e9x, there are tons of people out there that went from e9x and says they'll never look back. I'm sure you are in the minority but in the end do what makes you happy. |

I left for an M235i six speed, 4 months and 6,000 miles, I traded for a cpo 2012 M3 DCT. Not exactly the same, but I missed the way the M3 drove, the dct and in my case a convertible. Still haven't driven the M4, but it simply does not look that much of an upgrade given the cost.

OP yes you will trade off torque but you will gain in off-the-line traction. As you know it's tough to hook up in first gear given the fairly violent nature of boost onset in the M4.

Two day's ago I had one M4 coupé for testing!
Once I stepped out of mine ( M3 E92 ) and got into the M4, I felt like sitting in an W220 S Class, I sat higher then I usually do in the E92 ( weren't the seat height, it was more suspension related ). However, when I drove it a few miles, the feeling of an older S-Class didn't dissapeared and it started slowly but steady bothering me... The exterrior, the look over the hood, it really looked like someone took our M3 and gave it some 'roids...it's...uuuhm...somehow more bulkier? It then reminded me ( not quality wise ) on the ( 2015) S550 Mustang platform. Because eventhough the car seemed refined from the interrior, the exterrior was somehow lacking on refinement. Same as the mentioned Mustang, it looked like as the designer was kind of lazy after he finished the japanese ( ricer ) styled front and rear bumper and then just started to create bulky area's around the car. It even appeared to me as if the designer wasn't into the whole ///M thing, like we all here are. The side grill's almost got lost, the characteristical bump on the hood of our car's looked like a fading shadow compared to the ///M3 E92's...so much what actually gave the car life, just faded...where did the hood vent's go? All that along with the gliding unenvolved driver's S- Class ( DCT ) feeling led me to one conclusion... If I ever get myself an M4, that thing will be stripped as possible on purchase and definately will be ordered as an 6mt and I will buy an aftermarket hood with a higher bump and hood vent's in it. Will I buy myself one? Hell yeah! Just wait until the prices start to drop, wich allready started to go down the drain lol It's a great car but in no way comparable to our E92, as our car's are diva's with noises, steering-suspension-engine-transmission dream feedback, that I will never want to miss till the end of my life. It's such an almost undescribable experience and pleasure driving an M3 E92, that only we as the real owner's understand one eachother and noone else. Even if we try to describe it unless you didn't own or driven one, you'll never get to understand of what we were talking about! Will I because of that M4, ever consider to sell or trade my beloved and little sexy M3 E92? Hell no! But I'll for sure buy another ///M to the stable OP shouldn't feel bad about his thought's, but if I were him I would try to check out the M4 manual first, before again loosing a truck load of money. Then after a couple of years buy another ///M3 E92 and not sell or trade in his allready payed off M4 6mt. You know the cool thing is to have 2 of these kind of extraterrestrial E.T.'s in your garage, instead of just one. Now trade the M4 ( D-ouch-C-ouch-T-ouch ) and get yourself an 6mt. You will love it, just keep your future goal focused ( 2 ///M's one day ) and you'll be fine. Sorry for the long post... Last edited by vsix; 01-09-2016 at 11:27 AM.. |

I say go for it. If you miss it then listen to yourself... I couldn't part with my e90 either, the lease was up, I had to decide, and the new M's did nothing for me. While I like them...idk... It's not enough... So, I bought my car and I'm still in love every day... Like the other dude said "do what makes you happy"!

Interesting. I would say do it now while you can and for a good price. You still have time to order a new f8x for a few years anyhow. Snag a 2013 in great condition!

Im on my 4th set of Pilot sports in 20k miles. It is a torque monster but not useable much. I spin well into 3rd gear with just a jb4.

I tried jb4, ess and had mpe on my f80 and I tried to give it all the chance in the world but still didn't do it. Dct e92 with catless xpipe, high flow air filter and I'll 8600 rpm tune all naturally aspirated just hits all check boxes. I find I drive my e92 more than my 991s, it's that good to me. Will never supercharge it. It's staying as M designed it to be minus few tweaks

Although they "didn't allow test drives of new ///M Cars" I likes the look of the E9X more...Now the F8X's have grown on me and a large part of me regrets not going with a 2014 M4. Anyway you ask about e92 vs f82 encounters... People are just going to assume im biased when I say this but my 2011 M3 seems to be unusually fast for an M3...Even stock I was beating cars I shouldnt have and pulling very high trap speeds (115mph stock, and around 120mph+ with all the basic mods)... Stock vs Stock...F series will destroy E series in every way. E series (at least mine) with a good tune, straight pipes, intake, and a good driver will beat a stock 2014+ M3/M4... BUTTT, the new F series is so much more responsive to mods than E series...Like any turbo car, you have an easy 100+whp just by raising boost and running race gas or adding methanol injection... So F series with just a tune and exhaust would easily walk on any older m3.... Better comparison is a supercharged E92 vs. modded F82 Im guessing a well built ESS 650 s/c E92 Tuned properly, bolt ons and pushing a lot of boost with race gas should theoretically beat the newer m3/m4 bc more displacement and the high revving engine keeps you within a few hundred RPMS of peak HP. my .02....Im sure someone will beg to differ as a lot of it is subject to opinion and the speed of a car varies on so many factors...

OP I was in the same boat about 3 months ago. I picked up a 2015 M4, and after 6 months I traded it in for a low mileage e92 M3. Best decisions I've ever made. The size, steering feel, noise, the more raw feeling is amazing in the e92, and although the m4 is more comfortable and torque nothing beats the more involving feel of the M3 and the v8 revving to 8400 I absolutely love it. If you don't care for the upgraded idrive system, heads up display, tech, etc and are looking for a more raw, involving, and in my opinion a better drivers car I would recommend going for a e92 and keep it forever, that's what I did and there hasn't been a day were I've felt like I made a mistake.
