iDrive 6 "lite" vs iDrive 6.0

BMW advertises the 2018 M3/M4 non-touchscreen version of the infotainment system as iDrive 6.0. However, 2017 owners are able to code a version called iDrive 6 "lite". I'm curious... are there any known differences between iDrive 6.0 and iDrive 6 lite?

"iDrive 6 lite" can be coded in from iDrive 5. 6 lite has no touchscreen. 6 lite is essentially just a software update, kind of like updating your Windows.

"iDrive 6" for our 2018 M3/M4 has touchscreen but no gesture control.

There is a hardware and software difference between the two that are generally hidden. Touchscreen-able things generally do that. (minor difference of course).

HMI_VERSION stays ID5
HMI_ID_VERSION changes to id6_light

It is more of a skin or GUI than an update.

Ahh okay.

So essentially just cosmetic then. I thought it would also be some software changes.

This is not accurate. BMWUSA's website advertises the 2018 non-touchscreen version as iDrive 6, not a "lite" or watered-down version, as you can see from my original post. If I'm wrong then post something official from BMW stating otherwise.

The question I am asking is what are the software differences between a 2017 model that has iDrive 6 "lite" coded and a 2018 with iDrive 6, if there are any? There could be differences due to faster computers/processors in a 2018 vs a 2017 and may have different animations, features, speed, etc.

I believe that this whole "lite" thing refers to all the cars with iDrive 5 being able to display the same main menu as iDrive 6. Thing is, without the touchscreen, you can't take full advantage of the redesigned main menu. The only other thing is that with "lite" it will change the vehicle images (efficient dynamics display, etc) from whatever your car is, to the G30 images instead. This doesn't apply to 2018s that come with the full version of iDrive 6.

This aside, the features are the same as far as I can tell. I don't think they made hardware changes from 2017-18.

How can we not take full advantage of the redesigned main menu without touchscreen capabilities? The tiles are still active.

Tiles are still active, yes. I'll use navigation as an example. With touchscreen you can click the small tab that says Navigation and it will pull up the enter address menu; however, if you click the large square below it, you'll be taken to the map instead.

I don't believe this is possible without the touchscreen. Moving the iDrive controller down does not highlight the larger tiles.

The consensus on this forum is the MY18 M3/4 starting July 2017 production will have touchscreen capabilities. I have yet to see this information presented in an official advertisement from BMW.

My MY18 March 2017 production M4 does not have touchscreen capabilities. I can't even reach the screen so I wouldn't have used it anyways.

Only July 2017 and later builds will have touch screen as far as I'm aware. Anything before that is just iDrive 6 but with no touch screen capability. My 2018 M4 is a May 15th Build which am I yet to receive but I am 99% sure it won't have touch screen.

I been telling people this for a while and yet it seems they either cannot read BMW press release or can't do their own research.

I prefer iD6 over 5. Live tiles are amazing.

Question HMI ID6 vs. ID6L?

Reviving this old thread to help address my issue. I may be reading this incorrectly, but below indicates I have ID6, but with ID5 software!

I have touchscreen, CarPlay, and the ID6 GUI, but I seem to be missing some Vehicle Apps (Amazon Alexa) and the Screen Mirroring option.

hmi.type: BMW ID6L
hmi.version: NBTevo_ID5_2111_Release ID5_2111-540-2142A Build 28 - Rev:bb42ed0 2021-10-14 11:57:04

Does "ID6L" designate ID6 Lite, even though I have a touchscreen?
