Replacing just one rear tire?

Hey team,

Took my 2015 M3 for an alignment today and told them the back driver tire is slooooowly dropping PSI each week. They called and said a tiny nail is in the sidewall (even though I never saw one), and that I need a new tire (19" Continental). The car has 36k miles on it, and I just bought it last month. I thought I'd read that the 2015s only came with PSS tires which, if true, would mean the Continentals aren't the original tires and might not be very old.

Can someone with the right knowledge advise if it is bad to just replace one rear tire?

Thank you!

I personally like the pss or the 4s’s are good it depends on how much tread is left really on the rest of the tires.

First of all, if the car has 36k miles on it I highly doubt they are the original tires anyway But both the continentals and MPSS were/are factory tires.

As for replacing only one, it depends how many miles are on the rear set. You just bought it last month but were the tires brand new? If so then I would say replacing only the one tire is fine. If not then you should replace both rear tires so they have matching tread depth.

This is correct

Me personally, I would buy all pss just because I like the tire but it’s not needed

Ditch the 1 tire.. buy 4 new PS4S..then sell individually/as-a-set the remaining 3 Contis.

You're welcome

OP, you are correct that the 2015 M3/M4 came only with Michelin PSS tires. That's because Michelin has a contract with BMW that for the release year, all new M cars come with Michelin high-performance tires, and for the M3/M4, it was the Pilot Super Sport. After the release year, BMW is free to mix other manufacturers, although for the M3/M4, the only other tire has been Continental.

In 2016 I did Euro Delivery of my 2016 M4 along with another M4, two M3s, and 10 M2s. I had Contis, the other M4 (ZCP) had Michelins. On the M3s, one had Michelins and one Contis. All 10 M2s, being the release year, had Michelin PSS.

As others have said, at 36K miles, it is likely that the original tires have already been replaced.

Tough break on the bad tire. It's not a good idea to mix tire manufacturer's when replacing tires. The best advice so far is to replace all four with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. This is what I'm currently running on my car and they're fantastic in wet conditions, better than the PSS.

I got a nail in one of my PSS and used that as an excuse to get the PS4S. If I had Continentals, it would be even more of a no brainer.
