Sorry, going to repeat this often... until we get confirmation tomorrow.

We asked and were told by one of the engineers that there was absolutely no artificial sound feature, but others have written today that the M3/M4 will use the speakers to amplify the sound. A request for clarification is in at BMW and we should have an answer by tomorrow morning. Will update everyone.

And there is the issue. I do hope BMW has come up with a solid way to overcome physics. While water can remove heat from air very well. Air does not remove heat from water well. My 1992 GMC Typhoon had a liquid/air IC and it was great when cold. But it dropped, what felt like 100 HP, once heat soaked.

I am curious how well the resistance to heat soak will happen. The N54 and N55 were air/air like any track worthy turbo vehicle I am familiar with. But the new engine takes a seemingly step back with regards to track duty with a liquid/air system. But I can be hopeful though.

From the Car & Driver preview:

The sound isn’t all hot gas and steel pipes, though. As does the M5, the M3 complements the soundtrack by using stereo speakers to amplify the engine’s natural frequencies...
Jesus Christ...

Unrelated, they also claim the displacement to be 3.0L.

TBH, even if it does end up equipped with it and once someone disables it, I think the sound from the rear will be heard just fine.

Maybe they won't use it. Can you imagine your engine sound being affected by whether you get the base stereo, Harmon Kardon or Bang and Olufsen (if it gets offered)?

Then you'll get threads on here about whether to go for the Bang and Olufsen and having someone say, "Get it. It's the only way to appreciate the lower end sound of the engine."

If it is confirmed, it's not so easy to disable. If it operates the same way as on the M5, disabling it will require a fuse pull, which disables the entire audio system.

One of our M5 members has done it: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680384

Interesting info here. Also the weight of ~3300 lbs seems like is in the lightest configuration (will be interesting to see what that includes vs the 176 lbs of 'comparably equipped' car). Seems like the M3 and M4 may have different weights. Also talks about CSL possibility ("if approved") with further weight reduction.

The rev-match thing isn't a new feature, even for BMW. The new M5 and M6 with 6MT already have this feature.

Thank you for that precision. The mention of about only 80lbs reduction compared to the E9X has me unimpressed though, not enough to make a huge difference.

My E92 M3 with DCT, premium sound, EDC, nav, adjustable bolster seats weighed in at 3688lbs with almost full fuel and no driver. 3300lbs seems like a substatial weight reduction. Now we need to figure how much the options will weigh on the F8X...

It seems there is a lot of pumped marketing hype about the weight of this new F8X series. If it only boils down to 80kg, it is welcome, but not that significant.

12kg reduction is quoted from the 6MT. Are those 12kg included in the 80kg? If so, it means that a DCT F8X is now only 68kg lighter than an E9X. I guess I will have to wait and see.

I bought my E46 and E92 without even test driving them. Not so sure about the F82...

Well, I haven't been wowed by the size increase and exterior design of the newest 3 and 4 series, but on paper this is a hell of a car. A race car for the street. I was really hoping I wouldn't like the new ///M4, and could avoid the large price tag this will likely carry, but this looks awfully tempting...

I do. I have been hoping that the interior is much improved over the F30. What I see doesn't really give me a whole lot of hope.

Overall, still pretty psyched.

Woah!
Personally, I feel they should leave all the automatic mumbo-jumbo to the DCT. Kinda defeats the purpose of driving a manual. Rev-matching is a skill that most manual drivers acquire with practice. It's rewarding and fun, I don't want a computer doing it for me...

The new M4 looks like it will be an absolutely amazing car no doubt.

However, I'm a bit confused by the hysteria and excitement on the forum for stats that we've known for a long time. Dr. Nitschke's interview a couple months ago already confirmed the new M4 would be much lighter than the 435i. Estimates on this board were from 3300 - 3550. Power estimates were 420 hp - 460 hp. Torque was predicted to be 390 - 420.

The actual numbers came in at weight about 3500lbs. HP 430, Tq 370. So the very top end of the weight range, nearly the bottom end of the hp range and below the bottom range of the tq.

Again, I am not disparaging the new car, in fact I think it will be the greatest M yet and the reviews will all praise it. I'm just confused at the emotional reaction to the release of stats that all ended up right at the most conservative estimates on the board.
