There. I said it. Is that enough to have this thread locked again?
Lol.

Did BMWNA indicate the real root cause of the failure or did they just say they'd put a new engine in w/o any further explanation?

Man, Please let us know cause of the failure if you can inquire with the service manager at the dealership.

If this had anything to do with Spinning your Timing Chain Hub on the crank please report it in this thread:

Congrats on the best possible outcome. Great of the factory stepping up the way they have too.

Doesn't have to do with that. They speculated valve damage from the overrev but they didn't wanna crack open the engine since I said I wasn't paying for it, and they didn't want to. After about 2 months of it sitting at the dealership with a partially dismantled drivetrain they finally folded.

Good to hear since that was the only reasonable conclusion as they never showed you any evidence of abuse, they just told you they saw a minimal over rev that everyone of us likely do now and then. Nice that you stood your ground and I really hope that's the last we hear of members being denied warranty for a few rpms over rev ( claimed by BMW ).

I'm glad this was the outcome. BMW read these threads too, so I'm sure they wouldn't have been silly enough to deny warranty given the circumstance.

I agree. It was clear from the first week after talking to the representatives that were helping me that they felt confident in the denial based off of the location and overev. They were really jerking me around. However, the more I pressed them, and chipped away at their claim, the clearer it became that they were just trying to pass the blame off, and avoid footing a rather large repair bill. Luckily they realized I wasn't going to budge and they stepped up to cover the damage. Definitely not a fan of the amount of time it took, but BMW did the right thing in the end, kudos to them.

Wasn't your over Rev only 200-300 rpm above redline??? (sorry so many over rev. threads LOL) .....If that is the case there is more to the story the dealership/BMWNA is not telling. No Way in Hell 200-300 RPM over rev will blow this engine there is a margin of safety built in from the factory. Forum member Accel Junky had reved to 8,500 , 1k over redline and did not have issues with his engine. Too bad we'll likely never know the true cause

How much would they have charged for parts & labor if it werent going to be covered?

This is the part that really pissed me off. Those of you who are extra familiar with my story know I encountered some woes earlier in my M's life. In a previous accident in which an object on the road tore through the undercarriage, I was quoted the parts and labor for an engine. At that time, last March-June when the car was in for that, BMW of Dallas quoted me $26k in parts and labor.

That was last time, when I didn't need an engine...

Excuse my language, but the f*ckers at an unnamed BMW dealership in the Wayzata, MN area (whoops?) tried to quote me $43,000 in parts and labor. Needless to say I was more than offended, and sat down with the owner and both managers (parts/service, and sales) and showed them the quote from ANOTHER BMW DEALERSHIP for the same service.

This is the kind of shit I was dealing with to get this completed. It was not a pleasant experience.

It was probably 200-300 rpm over the absolute maximum engine speed, not the advertised redline which I'm sure has some sort of buffer built in.. The dealer should be able to tell you the maximum RPM which was recorded.

Please take the time to read through the thread. Multiple times it was stated that the overrev occurred at 7722rpm @152mph. It is even stated on one of the first pages I believe. I'm happy to answer questions, but it's a little annoying when it's one that's been answered and discussed several times before. Use your eyes before you use those fingers for typing perhaps

Glad that it all worked out for you. Took long enough, but it is good to know that BMWNA will stand behind their customers in situations like this.

That's great news! Congrats OP! They really made you sweat it though. What I don't understand is the car can't overrev because it a rev limiter, that's what they are there for. Now if they could show you did it for a prolonged period and repeatively in succession - maybe...but overrev? Anywho, glad it all worked out at the end and you'll be getting a brand new engine.
