very informative review. pleased with the result.

interesting with the initial hate on the f8x chassis it has withstood the test of time and critics.

A predictive, consistent, mesh between engine, suspension, and dct. Not perfect, but clearly more capable than my abilities to drive it.

I know I'm having a blast with mine, 3 years 26k miles later, still the car I loved since day 1.

Conclusion (not really a win for the M3, more like 3rd place ):

"The Alfa is the fastest just in a straight line. The BMW is fastest by some margin on the track. And when you just drive them for the sake of driving, each has its own style and charm."

"The BMW remains a car to admire rather than cherish. The Alfa, on the other hand, is as lovable as you'd hope, but also a genuinely brilliant to drive, hallel-fuckin-ujah. The Merc is pure unadulterated joy; I would have one in a heartbeat."

It still lost the comparo though, see post above. The Brits simply don't like the F8X.

Sorry. Should've said the Brit press...

I don't recall the F8X winning a single comparo in the British press while it has won more than it has lost in the rest of the world.

I haven't driven either of the others but they must be something else. He doesn't mention looks at all which is unusual as it's a pretty important metric. M3 -> Alfa then a long way back is the Merc.

BMW need to sort their shit out with the sound on the next gen. I have zcp with MPE and it's still average at best. Sounds cool when your free revving and that's about it.

I wonder if Jethro had to spend his own money what he would pick. Might ask him on twitter..

Only joshing.

Pistonheads recently gave it the nod over the QF and C63 in a track test, but yes they have given it a rough ride.

Although Chris Harris loved it on launch and when he first tested the QF he said it wasn't as good as the M3, only later to reverse that decision on the TG programme (well it's new and the producer probably told him to say so)

Thanks for the link- I'm not sure I understand the 3rd part conclusions.

To me, the m3 clearly punches above its weight class, though the oldest car in the lot, it is the lightest, and has the best tranny, and is the most fairly priced, and performs at or above others with much much more hp/torque, bigger engines, r compound tires, etc.

The track is clearly where the engine, tranny, suspension, etc must work together to become larger than the sum of its parts. I think it is the essence of what an M3 is and has always been, a trackable sports sedan, a jack of all trades.

As far as the engine, there is a lot of character to me. There is massive torque if you wish it, it pulls almost to the full redline at 7.5k which is crazy high for a turbo engine. I've had a lot of v8's and to me, this 6 has been very rewarding to drive, more character than the 4.4 on the x5m. Granted the sound sucks, but I am fine with that.

M division has kept to its values, imho.

Yes. I attribute this to the wet conditions that are common in England and usually present during the tests. Honestly, I'm not sure I would run an F8X in those conditions...

That said, the EVO Alfa Giulia QV vs. M3 ZCP I posted about (http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1393874) was one of the best showings yet for the F8X in the British press. Worth a read.

The results were as I expected. Could you post the track test video?

Conclusion (not really a win for the M3, more like 3rd place ):

"The Alfa is the fastest just in a straight line. The BMW is fastest by some margin on the track. And when you just drive them for the sake of driving, each has its own style and charm."

"The BMW remains a car to admire rather than cherish. The Alfa, on the other hand, is as lovable as you'd hope, but also a genuinely brilliant to drive, hallel-fuckin-ujah. The Merc is pure unadulterated joy; I would have one in a heartbeat."

Thanks for sharing!!

It had the best lap time which, to me, is the only metric that matters. I do love the other two cars in the segment but the M does it for me in the looks department and handling/track feel

I agree. That's why I own one (albeit the two door version)
