[EU] M4 with the new particle filter sounds very different from previous model year

Back in June I test drove a M4 which still didn't have the new particulate filter (and still had the carbon fiber driveshaft). The exhaust sounded pretty good, I liked the burbles and crackles.

3 months later I finally got delivered my new M4. It has the new particulate filter (Due to the WLTP regulation cars are being fitted with Otto Particulate Filters (OPF)). It doesn't do burbles or crackles, sometimes I can hear some burbles but something very minimal. Under acceleration it's also a bit quieter than the testdrive M4. They never told me about the new filter but I did know about it because of this forum.

I've already complained about this with my salesman, currently waiting reply.

Anyone else with the same problem?

You can easily remove the filter. I did.
But
My buddy’s 2018 sounds exactly the same as my 2017.

I thought only EU cars had the new particulate filter because of emission regulations. It was added in 2019MY cars (from 07/2018 onward). 2018MY doesn't have this filter.

This is true, it’s coming on 2019 M3/4 models to comply with new emission standards, which btw is the reason BMW is using sighting they had eliminated the cf driveshaft(I’m calling bs on that - probably a cost cutting measure?). So it is what it is. Here in the US I’m sure a complete exhaust replacement, as per Tommy’s suggestion, might help things? But not sure if removal would cause cars to fail local or state emissions testing where it’s required by law.

Funny how the other manufactures, German and the rest, are coping with the new 2019 rules, they seem to sound ok based on sound clips I’ve heard on some new ‘19 models or the very least not much change from previous exhaust notes.

Move to the US while we still don't have GPF regulations (Gasoline Particulate Filters). Althought 2025 might be a different story!!!!

So would a July 2018 F80 build have the particulate filter?

Unless your buddy lives in Europe his car doesn't have one and neither did yours, so not really relevant to the discussion.

Asking just in case, have you tried the Sport and Sport+ engine settings?

Another sound thread? News flash, most don't think they sound very good even without the filter.

I think f80 ended production before it got the new filter.

Yes. I can't tell any difference between Efficient and Sport+ while idling. The one I testdrove you could instantly tell as soon as I clicked the button to change it. Only under acceleration I can see a difference but it's not much.

I think it sounds pretty good without the filter (competition package). I really enjoy all the burbles and crackles.

I guess I should've been more clear. The subject has been beaten to death and then risen from the dead only to be beaten to death again more times than most can count. That was ultimately my point.

One thing for certain is, we lost a cf drive shaft for this damn euro version emissions code that we don’t need to follow in the US in any event!

It seems to appear 2018 will be the model year to own for the F80/F82 production.

I recall reading that BMW upped the boost slightly to offset the drag create by the filter - I wonder if updating the software will result in increased stock power?

My F83 is April 2018 build with M Performance exhaust (ultimate package) has carbon fibre tips.

Instant change of sound when switching to sport or sport+ mode.

Burbles and crackling is loud and fun specially around 3000RPM.

Efficient mode is significantly quieter which works great for Normal/Highway driving.

Only dummies complain about car noise. It is all damn relative whoever you ask. S55 sounds fine the way it is. Definitely not a V8 but that's science.

To the rest of you, stop bitching. Half of you would probably complain about a kitty wearing a sombrero. The car is near the end of it's production life.

As for the OP, a filter shouldn't muffle the exhaust overrun unless something changed which I highly doubt. What you are describing doesn't make a lot of sense. If you have ZCP (Competition) the Exhaust Overrun is there in Sport, and way more aggressive in Sport +. Sport, driving above 3k RPM should give you the burbling. Sport+ it's generally above 2k. Wait until you have broken the car in then see.

Diesel particle filters make a huge difference in exhaust sound. I don't know how they differ from gasoline particle filters, but it makes perfect sense to me that it would muffle it at least a little bit.
