NoFlyZone - New S55 World 1/2mile record ***

Excited to share truly amazing results from this past weekend's NoFlyZone event hosted by Omega Motorsports in California.

@BMWOfSanRafael ran 178.57mph at the event which is the new 1/2 mile S55 World Record for the time being Very strong and consistent out there doing 3 passes all hitting 177-178mph.

This M3's motor had a rods/pistons done, runs Pure Stage 2+ turbos, a custom E85 tune by F80Paul using bootmod3, upgraded DCT clutch packs, fuel-it secondary port injection, cooling mods by CSF, meth injection, stock rear exhaust! It might've even had a 180mph in it.

(@trapdadx2 on IG):
"Best thing is this car got put back together 3:00 Friday afternoon. Made a few test hits Friday night. Left at 4:00am Saturday drove 266 miles to the track. It haled its own race day gear and extra fuel. Ran those times slips and was driven back home 266 miles. And will be used to get to work Monday"

Congrats TKT2SPEED and F80Paul!

What the IG post doesn't say is when the WMI system, heat exchanger, and intercooler were added... from what I recall, a bunch of new stuff were literally installed a day prior to the event, so it's quite possible there's more left in the tank for this car.

Also, correction on the stock motor claim. This car actually has forged pistons installed recently, as well.

OP updated thank you for sending in those details!

Another piece of info we got is that this car was doing standing 1/2mile runs to compare with prior runs at ShiftSector. NoFlyZone is a rolling start type 1/2 mile event. If this car was doing a rolling start it would've most likely cracked 180mph+

No worries!

For NFZ, dig start actually puts the car closer to 90 mph by the time it hits the starting point, whereas rolling start typically hits the orange cones between 40-50 mph depending on who they're pacing.

Andy said he started from the 1/2mi standing line (about 370ft in front of where everyone else was starting. He did this so that we could compare the runs to ShiftSector from a few weeks ago.

That's nuts! I didn't get to witness any of his runs live, but Andy must've been the only car doing that at NFZ. I know he was busy working remotely with you throughout the day, and he also had his son in the car with him the whole time, even during the 1/2 mile runs.

But in general for NFZ, a dig start usually means higher mph at the starting point compared to a paced rolling start. This is what all the GT-R, Lambo and other AWD guys were doing.

Looking forward to better times from Andy's car, however.

Hi Nars Great meeting you out there...... we were not there for any records just working on what we learned from the Shift Sector event the week before. We made some changes to the set up during the week and wanted to see if they worked....as we had not achieved the goal we wanted for the car at the event the week before. We tried both type of runs the first few runs we went from the back but we maxed our 3.5 bar map sensor out so had to abort and make changes ! My son was not in the car for standing half passes just the first two we aborted. We ran into some fueling gremlins so were not able to do a full pass from the back and finished the day around 3 a few hours early.

Never the less the Shift Sector Standing 1/2mile runway in Coalinga is what we really measure the car too which we did 175 multiple times last week. Im sure there will be much more competition at their event in April .....we have some more left in the car so will be there in April hopefully able to get the car over the 180 mark. We and our partners have a few tricks left up our sleeves.

The goal is for the car to be a full weight street car you can drive to and from the track with no compromises and go 180 mph in the standing half. We drove her almost 1000 miles the last two weekends to and from the events and did not turn a wrench on the car. The stock exhaust is there because i hate loud street cars this is not suppose to be a race car just a fast BMW you can drive everyday !

I cant thank Paul Johnson (F80PAUL) of Paul Johnson tuning enough for all the time he has spent dialing this car into a perfect daily driver I drive it work most days!
Jesse, Charles and Eugen from Pure Turbos, Steve Jenkins from Fuel it have all been a big help and of course our Team at BMW of San Rafael !

180+ mph standing half is just mind blowing!

Nice meeting you at NFZ, neighbor! You should come to Sonoma this Wednesday if your schedule permits. Myself and another F80Paul tuned customer are heading to TFB Performance for a quick dyno session (literally 30 minutes in and out). Then we're off to the drag strip down the hill for some 1/4 mile times.

PM me for details if you want to jump in on the mini dyno day.

Love seeing this car and how it's daily driven and drives to/from events like mine has been 98% of the time.

What piston/rod/ring combo did you go with? Did you guys do any cylinder honing? (I understand the coating is an issue for honing iirc) I plan to do some similar mods eventually with an M2 Comp.

Thanks !

Im pretty sure we met at Shift Sector if Im thinking correctly in April are you from Canada?

We used off the shelf cp pistons and the rings that came with the kit and Carillo rods and carr fasteners. CP makes the pistons in 2 sizes depending on if you are going to do a light hone. We went with the smaller stock bore size as we did not hone the block as it had just over 6000 miles on it.

That M2 Comp will be a ton of fun with the Mods !!!

Yessir that was me. Did your dealership do the install? Might have to make a stop in for clutches and bottom end mods if that's the case. I've also heard headgames is working on a port along with a Ferrea valvetrain upgrade...apparently there's lots of valve float issues that go un-noticed in the S55. Might be some easy gains to be had there.

Increase in spring and seat pressure alone will help the high-rpm float sessions. Big upgrade over N54 head, but still alot to improve upon.
