Dealer Tire & Wheel Insurance
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I am turning in my leased 128i this weekend and stepping up into a 2015 M4. The dealer is promoting their tire and wheel insurance with cosmetic damage coverage for $2700. I did opt for it on the 128 and used it once for a tire. Fell well short of the ~$1200 cost. Figuring with snow tires it cuts 3 months of usage out per year of the summer tires. What's your opinions on whether it makes sense to get the insurance for Ohio driving? |

$2700?
Don't do it. Grab a full set of take offs in the for sale section for $2k, or just buy tire insurance from Discount/America's Tire for ~$100 if you're not worried about the wheels.

But regardless that's a lot of money, you can find 4 wheels/tires/tpm for that much in the tire/wheels sub forum

Wheels can be repaired for <$300 (never had to replace wheels due to damage in 25+ years). Tire punctures can usually be repaired for <$30. In the worst case you would need to replace the entire tire, so figure $300 for that + $50 to install and balance. Now do the math on how many damage events you will need to accumulate to break even at $2.7 price point! a

I am not sure what the roads are like in Ohio but I'll say my experience with roads in Montreal, Quebec has been such that the tire and wheel insurance is a must. Package is 1200 CAD so that's like 900 USD. That price is just insane! If they can provide a reasonable insurance price and the roads are horrendous then by all means (I actually used $5000 worth of insurance money on tires). Otherwise I would agree with others that banking your money makes more sense

Thanks for the advice.
My biggest concern is the rims. I am extremely careful around curbs. My 128i rims are flawless after 3 years and with only one warranty tire replacement I am in hole with the first go around. I'm not sure on the length of the warranty. Guess I am going to pass.... |

I'm struggling with the same decision. Normally, I never take additional insurance on anything. My quote was $1400 for three years. Which would include my summer and winter set. I pick up my car in December, and while I still have time to decide. I'm leaning towards the insurance. The 666 wheels are stupid expensive to replace, and as mentioned above Montreal roads are not the best.
I guess like all insurance, it comes down to piece of mind. |
