Just out of curiosity, how long does the car have to sit before you should get a charger. Because of Covid stay at home/work at home restrictions and some other health issues I’ve had two separate 2 week periods where I didn’t drive the car.

I’m at 31,400 km on my 2017 M3C purchased new near the end of 2018. No issues (except having to replace my winter rear tires 2 months ago because one of them had a puncture from a nail), and the ca is still in pristine condition.

I’m not sure if should get a charger if I don’t drive it for any more 2 week stretches in the winter. When the weather has been really bad or during the few winter road trips to the mountains, we’ve usually taken the SUV.

I don’t think I’ve ever had such low KM on a car. It’s warranted until Jan 2022, so I’ve got to decide whether to sell this summer or extend the warranty. The ugliness of the G80 has me unsure what to get as a replacement if I do sell. But if I keep the car and get an extended warranty, I’m wondering if the BMW (Canadian) extended warranty would also cover the battery and if I should get a charger for next winter.

Pretty new at this point MY 2018 20k miles. No hint of battery issues.

kss: 2-3 weeks between drives ( like 30+ minutes drive ) is a non issue. probably a lot longer in between is fine even. To keep things happy, if my car has sat for ~3 weeks, and I know I wont drive it soon I throw it on a lith-ion specific trickle charger for a few hours to top up. there is another thread about chargers. edit: Link to other thread: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1041971

A few of my friends are Tesla owners/fans and have told me about the charge/state logic their cars use to maintain the battery. Supposedly its better for long term Lithium battery life to charge to, and sit at 80-90% charge state. Topping up to that full 100% can stress the cells. Not sure if that translates to our batteries. Ive never been advised not to fully charge a cell phone.

edit: lately i have been seeing more and more info indicating it is a general case that lithium batteries last longest when they are charged to ~85% and not topped up to max. No idea what the charge logic is in our cars, or of the various trickle chargers. They might report 100%, but how could we know its not 100% of advised max charge, or whatever decisions they make.

Looks like as long as you drive the car regularly and don't leave anything on unnecessarily, you'll be fine for 6-8 years

2015 with 74k km (46k miles). I daily drive it and park it outside a couple times a week when I'm at work. It gets cold where I'm at too, like -30. No battery issues and still on original battery. Knock on wood!

2017 with original battery and 40k. I drive it 2-3x a week to keep the fluids moving. During peak COVID I did hook it up to a Noco smart charger on the LiOn mode. I hope these last 8-10 years at least since if maintained they do have longer life than AGM.

Been almost 2 years since the last post. Everyone still on original?

I have a 2016 with close to 80,000 miles and on original. Car is in Canada so gets cold weather.

Hoping to avoid this costly item.

Early 2015, 60k miles. Original battery. I leave it on a CTEK charger in the garage if I don't drive it for a couple days. Never had any issues starting, charging or draining.

I plugged the charger into my F83 according to their schedule after 6 weeks and it was 75%. F83 2016 original battery.

BMW says this about charging intervals.

87k, original battery at 78%, 2016 model, if it sits it is on a lithium trickle charge!

I haven’t read the entire thread but, will your battery benefit from a full charge from a trickle or other charger or no it doesn’t matter. Assuming the car is driven a few times per week at least.

BMW says this about charging intervals.
Does this mean you don't need a trickle charger if you drive your car at least once every 6 weeks?

If the battery is good and you drive it long enough to fully recharge, yes.

Battery life

I thought mine was exceptional until I read this thread. My 6/6/14 production 2015 M4 has had no hint of battery issues and never been on a charger. Coming up on 9 years! Also knock on wood!
