carry things that won't fit in the trunk. i don't think a mountain bike would fit.. maybe if you take off the front wheel.

I would think the use of a fold-down rear seats is pretty self-explanatory, i.e. to fit anything that doesn't fit with the seats up.

I have fold-down seats and I don't think I've ever used them. I've got two child seats in the way, anyway. Next car, I may skip this option.

The safest way to carry your road, or mt. bike. (front wheel off) is with the back seat folded. Get a bike box from a bike shop and cut it to fit your truck. Bike slides in easy. I also protect my bumper with a towel when doing this.
I use to work in a bike shop. (hobby) Up top, we replace many bikes for owners driving into their garage. Hanging off the back, we replace many bikes for owners who back into or get backed into. If you have a hot bike, keep it inside the BMW. If you have inexpensive bikes, then hang them off the back with a rear hitch and detachable rear rack. |

Just wondering, is there a BMW dealership anywhere near you? A lot of the questions you ask can be answered by seeing the cars in person. Not trying to be snotty... but a brochure and a test drive will really help you.

Yep, a road bike will fit with front wheel off. I won't say it's super convenient to get it in there, but it's nice to know I can.

When my hartge lip shipped, I folded down the rear seats to take it to get it painted.
Also carry my mountain bike, too (front wheel off).

i also use it to carry my mountain bike (w/ the front wheel removed), although it is a tight fit (20" frame).
because of the size, i've been considering for some time getting the BMW base rack system w/ thule attachments. greatly increases the utility of the car (IMHO)... |
