2006 325XI. I bought it for my wife used and it came with only 1 key fob. Even the actual spare key is missing. This might be a dumb question, but can I just buy any used key fob and program it to use it on my car?? I have seen it being auctioned on ebay.

No and thrice no. Any old fob is useless as it has to be set up for your car. It is probably a factory request because they hold all the information about your car. I know it will be expensive but at least it won't be the complete waste of time the e-bay purchase would be.

Lots of makes of cars are like this nowadays and the number of people who have bought a "blank" key and wasted their money is quite substantial.

You have to go to the dealer's parts department with ownership paper in hand to order a new one base on your VIN. It costs just under $200. When it comes it comes in two seperate pieces - the blade which is pre-cut to fit your locks, and the remote pre-programmed to work with the car. If you have comfort access they will have to "pair" it with the car before the hands free feature will work.
