If it occurs at slow speeds, several people have had this happen. I have noticed it in mine too for the last few weeks. the steering column may have to be changed for this.

Same problem here....

I think it's due to loose belt. Squeaks only when cold and only for a minute or so when turning.

Seems to be happening on cars a year older or more.....

it happens even if i ahve been driving for like an hour or so. it happened before but i thought it was jsut some temporary thing, then it was gone. but with the colder weather here i think it was because of the cold or maybe it needed some lube or something. it's getting really annoying sometimes
the sound is coming right behind the wheel

It happens to my car too. I think its the power steering busting ass. It has happened in almost every car I've driven.

I believe this has been talked about on the forum. I have it and it only happens at really low turning speed for me (like someone said while doing in/out turning parking maneuvers). And I can barely hear it with the radio off and with a completely silence cabin.

I brought it to the dealer attention 8 months ago and they hear the sound too and they told me they do not know of any SIB for this sound and I would have to leave the car with them overnight so they can disassemble my steering column to get to the problem, I said forget it I can live with the faint sound. The sound does not seem to get worse with age for me. I have over 50K now so there is really nothing I can do at this point as it will cost me to bring it into the dealer.

It's one of the most common BMW issues ever - has done it for generations of models, E46's did it, X5's do it E9x's do it - especially when it is cold. Generally it is just some light contact between parts of the column and a little lube will help - see if the dealer will do a good will repair under warranty since you complained about it before you had the 50k on it!

Thanks for this info. like you, I am very reluctant to leave the car elsewhere for something minor, and your post is reassuring.
