E92 Windows

anyone knows why e92 windows automatically scroll down everytime you open the doors and then scroll back up when the doors are closed. what's the purpose?

disclaimer: search yielded nothing. and it's not in the damn manual.

It allows the glass to pass by the doorframe. My 911 does it too.

can you still close the doors if the windows are broken and stuck?

It'll pass by the frame without moving down but won't seat properly on the gasket I believe. So the lower is to prepare for the raise when it closes which seals the window. Still doesn't stop them from breaking at 100+ and making all kinds of wind noise.

so it serves no purpose and unnecessary. another potential problem down road to spend money, but it's quite fancy.

The E46 coupe did this also. I'd guess there is a point to it.
Germans don't fess about if there's no need.

The doors are frameless, so the windows roll down a little and then back up to provide a better seal. This has been a function in all the coupes since the E36 coupes back in 1992. I have had a 92 coupe, and a 2001 coupe and neither have ever had a problem with the windows breaking due to this function. The windows have been subjected to snow and freezing rain and they still roll down. The only time they failed was when the battery died.

It does the samething on CLKs. Might provide some sort of protection on the window itself when you close it.
Might be wrong.

I must say it is REally annoying when the seal isnt very tight, and lets air hrough, the sound of the wind gets to me, everytime.

On my old 633csi, I WISH they slid down and resealed. Those windows used to GROW in the cold and hit the drip rail on the roof when you closed the door. I think this is the best invention ever for frameless doors. My Boxster does the same thing, but it's like lightning fast...10x faster than BMWs

Yes, the windows just push past the rubber molding. Not as slick as them rolling down 0.25" but they still close fine.
