Competition/Ultimate Package Differential?

So I'm in the process of ordering a brand new M3. I have a question regarding the rear differential and the competition package. BMW states that the differential found in m3/m4s that have either the Competition Package or the Ultimate Package is different from the differential found in "normal" M3/M4s. Does anyone have any information regarding the difference between the two units?

We do not have the "Ultimate Package" in the U.S. However, given that the "Ultimate Package" in Canada is basically every option ticked (including Competition Package) then it does make sense that the differential may be different than that of the regular M3/4.

I wasn't aware this was a Canadian only package. But yes, you're correct, it's basically every option ticked off. So let's speak about Competition Package cars. What is different about the rear differential?

Read through this thread:

I am not certain the exact changes but basically it is more aggressive and better.

I know this is not what you're asking but I wouldn't go with the ultimate package. You really don't save much unless you absolutely want the m performance parts. I ended up saving over 10k by picking and choosing the right packages including individual exterior and interior. Good luck.

I have not heard anything about different rear differential. But if I were to guess, the hardware/software will most likely be about the same but with small tweaks because the competition package (and ultimate, which includes the competition package) has a slightly increase performance. So the differential may need a different setting to accommodate.

As for the question regarding ultimate package or not. I agree with para, if you can live without the luxury items, ultimate package is not a good deal. BMW tried to make it harder for us Canucks to not choose the ultimate by taking away the carbon fibre package for 2018, but if they are not a top want for you, no need to pick the ultimate package.

If you asks me, if you are fine with a more basic car. Just get the competition package and you will be all fine.

MPE and individual color made it worth it for me. Two big ticket items I know I wouldn't have splurged for otherwise.

Unless you don't pick an individual color then it's really not worth it. As someone mentioned above doing it after the fact is much cheaper. If you're leasing and can residualize it, that's another story but I wouldn't buy the car with ultimate package. I did all the MPE carbon parts and MP exhaust with CF tips afterwards for a fraction of the cost.

If you want all those options and the individual color, the pkg is worth it. Think it works out to 5k cheaper.

Even more when you take into consideration installation costs, time, effort etc.

I think it is worth it for someone that is considering getting a loaded car. Doing the math for MY2018 M4 and it's worth about $3.5k even if you don't take an individual color:

$ 895 Metallic paint
$4400 Carbon Package
$6500 Competition Package
$4500 Premium Package
$4500 Executive Package
$1500 Driver's Assistance Package
$4900 MPE
$ 750 Smartphone connectivity
$27 945 TOTAL
$24 500 Ultimate Package
$ 3 445 SAVINGS

To answer the OP's question, the CP shares the same physical differential with the base car, but apparently the programming is different on the CP.

I like to add here that if you go with ultimate package and pick an individual colour that is not on the ordering list you do get a discount on getting that colour. Normally if you get an individual colour it could be around 7,000$ but if you order it with ultimate package, they can do it for about half the price.

Didn't realize you could choose ones not on the list. It's even a better deal if CanAutm3 is right about the 5k savings even without factoring the individual color.

Umm for the ultimate package, you can only pick the colours specified in the pricing guide. Such colours like San Marino blue. If you want a colour like tanzanite or azurite black, it will be extra. So yes it's a good deal if you like one of the colours listed under the ultimate package.

How? I'm pretty sure UP is better value?
