Caught Speeding...
So I am 20 years old, got caught doing, *allegedly*, 55 in a 30, (people regularly do 50 on that road), and it was an incorporated village cop.
The fine is $225.00 and 6 points...my record has been perfect until now, I've been driving for 4 years with no tickets, nothing. I am about to get my EMT license and I am a member of my local fire department (although I didn't tell the cop this, he gave me the ticket and was gone). I am deciding to plead not guilty and will appear in court in late June... Any advice on what to do/say at court? Can the fact the I have a clean record and am a member of the fire department get me out of this? I am going to meet the DA there. |

And I don't think I'm stuck, either. There is a way. |

what time was it? was it estimated? radar? you have a lot of things to think about that can work out in your favor. did you tell the cop anything? emergency?

Have you thought about getting a lawyer to assist you with this? It costs more upfront but it's worth it in the long run.

If you have a clean record, you may want plead 'no contest'. In my experience, the judge will often withhold adjudication if you have a decent record and make you pay the fine and court costs. In the end, it's all about the money.

Always plead not guilty. The worst is you get the fine and the points. the best is you get a lower fine and/or lower points. No downside except for your time and effort.

IMO I would Hire a lawyer just because you don't want those points on your license.
In NJ I got caught racing on the highway, I got tickets for, Racing(5 points) Reckless(5 points), and speeding(4 points). Hired a lawyer plead guilty, got a lecture from the judge and only wound up with 2 points on my license. |

This is on Long Island, NY...DMV says 6 points for a speeding violation of over 25mph, which is mainly why I am fighting it. I am only 20 and don't want 6 points on my license.

had the same thing happen to me 6 pts and 250 dollar ticket.. perfect driving record.. I pleaded guilty and apologized in front of the judge and he reduced it to 150 dollars and 1 point. Eveyone else that day who said not guilty got full ticket and points so that was my experience. I also dressed nice in court so I didnt look like a smuck... hope that helps.

Be a man...own up to what you did wrong and pay what the court tells you to.
I am always amazed how people try to worm their way out of responsibility for their actions. Have some integrity! |

You kidding? If I have the chance to lower my fine and/or points I'm gonna do it. I have a perfect record. You have to fight the system sometimes.

People make mistakes. I mean as long as you dont kill someone or speed like crazy on a daily basis, it's okay IMO.

I agree with the others here saying to go through a lawyer. I don't know about there, but here the starting rate with X-Copper is $300 and would cover a speeding ticket like this. At the very least they would remove the 6 point punishment and lower it to a different offense.

Hmm, where are you located? Typically here in Nassau County, Long Island, our municipality is in so much debt and pretty much so bankrupt, that they plea bargain. They just want your money, but will reduce the severity of the ticket so your insurance premiums won't go up.
BTW, don't ever invest in Nassau County municipality bonds. They're worthless. Classic example of "junk bonds"

Just because others did it, doesn't mean it's ok to do. You broke the speed limit, right? Right! Then just own up to it and take it like a man. Don't mean to sound like an ass, but "allegedly" doesn't count.
