$40,000 for a 135 or 3 er?

While at my BMW Service Center yesterday, I checked out a 135. Great small car, except it was over priced at $40,000. For that amount of money one is so much further ahead to get a 3 er. Plus I cannot imagine the 135 will hold its resale value like a 3 er. I am skeptical that the 1 Series will succeed in the marketplace.

a comparably equipped 335 will cost you $4000 to $5000 more than a 135.

yes, $40k is a lot of money for a small car like the 135. but did u drive it when u were at the dealer?

if not, then you really owe it to yourself to test drive it. it outperforms the 335 in pretty much every performance category.

1..Priced coupe to coupe the 335 will be significantly more $$
2..The 225hp E46 330 came in ~$42k over 5 yrs ago, and the 135 isn't that much smaller, and has 300 hp.

I took a test drive of a 135 and ended up ordering a 335.

I thought the 135 was a fun car to drive, but unfortunately the demo was an automatic which was a disappointment. Also, I felt like the shorter wheelbase really detracted from the drive - I was much happier with the 335.

In the end, I spent $5k more and got what I wanted. Crossing the $40k mark for the 135i was too much.... maybe if it was under $35k it would sell.

note the 48 month residual on the 1'er makes this car perfect to lease out until the warranty is up. But you're going to probably get DME81 and pay msrp (or close to it) on an ordered or in-transit model.

I was ready to order one but bringing the kid with us reminded us this wouldn't replace the audi a4. Having a sedan on the floor made us realize we could enjoy replacing the A4 (keep it around for ikea or whatever bigger trunk) and get our maximum value of driving the 335i full time.

I think its been said everywhere but car reviews the 1 didn't receive the huge price increase this year that the other models did. So order a 335i coupe;335 sedan; and 135i coupe and then compare prices. You'll see they bumped the 3 series alot more than the 1'er.

$1280 rebate on the 3'ers to move them helps digest the cost a little more.

FYI, 1 series is #9 on Edmunds' top 10 Residual Value

http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/...1/article.html

I for one am a big fan of the 1 series, its got the making of a cult car (which also means its not for mainstream appeal).

The 135 is incredible I just don't like it as much as the 335 mainly for the miniscule feel of the 135 is just not for me. With that in regards, the 135 looks darn good with my girlfriends that drive 1 and for my styling and fashion perspectives the 335 compliments ME more.

135i FTW!!
if you order one you can get the price under 40K. the dealer just packs them full of stuff, then people think its an overpriced little car, but if you spec one out yourself you end up coming out ahead.

I could not imagine using a car as a regular car that is smaller than my E92. I like the size of the E92, but the 135 is just too small. I think the styling is

i freaking love the looks!
guess it depends on the person.

i love the 335i coupes with aftermarket body parts, but they dont look very aggressive stock.

That's a hard decision, but in the end I personally would go with the 135i mainly because the performance. For looks 335i wins hands down.

My theory. The price gap will widen between the 1 and 3 with the intro of the 2009 3 Series. So get your '08 3 while it still is a relatively good deal versus the 1.

+1, and bigger space for 335i.

That's true as well... I guess that decision really depends on your lifestyle and what you need in a car... Good luck with the decision!

If the e92 is big enough for daily use then so is the 135i. You only loose less than an inch of front leg room and an inch and a half of rear leg room (a problem if you shuttle people around all the time but then why buy the coupe if you do?). The same published numbers give the e82 more shoulder room, head room and an extra 2 cu-ft of trunk space.

Is the extra space usable? Maybe, maybe not. But for day-to-day things it isn't as small as you'd first think (again, baring passengers in the back that actually have legs). By the numbers the e82 is only smaller in the outside.

its an ugly, excuse me FUGLY car (subjective) but most tend to agree, the performance aspect is barely something to consider (believe the 1er is maybe 1/10th second faster). For that small aspect i would never consider the 1er. On top of that its like 4-5k less...when your already spending 40k i dont think 5k matters....

If that car was priced sub 35s then it would be something to consider....

Take a deep breath and relax. Then wait 6 months. I predicted here a long time ago 335 would be available used with low miles in the thirties and its now true. Once the reality sets in that 5 dollar a gallon gas is the future and will be here forever a blood bath is going to insue on car values. I was saying you would be able to get a great 335I for the low thirties this fall. Now I think they will be in the high twenties. For the moment resale on the 135 is high because dealers are only getting a limited number of them. Once the inititial market demand is met they will be available cheap. You may even find a 128 commanding higher resale value. If you are into performance cars don't by a thing before next Oct. You will feel like you stole it then when you see the prices.

They are a limited car this year.
here is some facts for you guys.
this year they will release:
~10,000 1-series
~150,000 3-series (They sold ~146,000 last year in the US)
so there is going to be alot more 3 series than 1 series driving around i like having a limited car, instead of everyone driving the same car.
Just my .02 cents.

I'm sorry, but I've seen multiple 1-series in Europe and a few in the States recently and they really don't look aggressive at all. If anything, the headlights make the car look goofy or dopey-looking. Yes it is opinion and I know that doesn't reflect what everyone else thinks of the car, but I just can't settle with its looks, or its price. But that's just me.
