Problem- Help! Engine Malfunction!
Wife called last night while she was driving the car home from work- she says the "engine malfunction reduced power" light came on. She also told me that for the last couple of days it's been cranking alot before firing up and stalling after starting. I thought that turning the car off and letting the sensors reset etc over night would help but, this morning same thing- long crank, then start, then stall...tried again, same thing...tried a 3rd time, started and then was fine but, the engine light stayed on. Called the SA at Bloomfield, BMW- they said it's probably the fuel pump. Should we be driving the car? Any ideas? This is the 3rd problem and the car is less than six months old! Ridiculous...although I still love the damn thing.

Sounds like the HPFP.(High Pressure Fuel Pump).. Take it to the dealership and have them swap out for a new one...

Megan's Law: If anything goes wrong with your 335i, always blame on HPFP.

Ok so the car is getting serviced this Saturday and I'll have a loaner- I hope it's just the fuel pump and nothing else...

You can drive it..... But I wouldn't, nor would I let anyone else... your already seeing the signs of failure and the last thing you want is for your wife to be driving that thing somewhere in the highway or freeway and it takes a shit when she's in the fast lane doing over 70 or so.....

Problem still present after HPFP replacement
Was your problem resolved finally?
I had the same exact problem (long crank when engine is cold in the morning and engine light comes on and stays. I've been to the dealership 4 times now and everytime they claim that they have fixed the problem. Next morning, same thing comes up. at first they said they had to replace the pump. Then they said its the valves and for some reason it had alot of carbon build up on 3 valves. My SA said its probably because of the type of gas i use??? That's funny because I don't put anything other than high octane (91) in my car!!! So they soked it over night and claimed again that now it was clean and the problem is fixed. This morning again keeping my fingers crossed, turn the engine on and same problem!!! I'm very frustrated. I know alot of people have this problem but i'm not sure how many have been fixed after HPFP replacement. |

Shouldn't the faulty HPFP be considered a safety hazard? Besides the car stopping in a desolate area, I remember hearing something about causing damage as well - is that true?
