Rattle trap
Lately, my 2006 e90 has become a rattle trap. I've picked up an annoying rattle in the dash just above the instrument cluster. The strange thing is that it only rattles in the morning before the car warms up. So for 30 minutes on my way to work I try to figure out how to make it stop. Luckily for me, on my ride home a new rattle on the back speaker deck takes it's place. I've had the rear deck issue fixed once before, but now its back. I know I'm not the only one having these issues, but I don't want to go to the dealer just to complain about rattles. Anyone have any home made fixes for these annoying rattles? I hat driving a $40,000 car that sounds like a rented Neon.

I had the rattle above the cluster, and I found it to be the small vent to the left. I pried it out from the front (carefully!) and applied black felt on the inside. It seems the vent piece can come in contact with the dash inner area, especially when cold. That sound is completely gone now, over bumps, when the a/c is on and in the cold mornings. I don't have any pics, I'm afraid to take it apart again but you get the idea. Now the only noise I have are the sport seats which squeak like a a whore's bed!
For the rear deck, I cut a piece of vacuum tubing, long enough for the window, and shoved it into the area between the deck vent and the window, completely invisible, and it eliminated the creak.

I had a killer rattle from the dash in my 08 E92. Looked all over the dash for something loose. Turned it into the dealership for eval and they found it was in the rear view mirror. Would have bet anything it was from the dash... Check your mirror.

Where sounds originate from in a car can be just hellish to find. Sometimes, helps to have a spotter ride along to make sure you are onto the source before you tear something apart looking.
For a longtime I could have sworn I had a sunroof rattle/squeek but it turned out to be the rear ashtray in the center console. |

Take a credit card and slide it between the bottom of the instrument cluster and see if the noise stops (it did on ours) if it does then remove the cluster and add felt tape to the bottom of the cluster.

I need someone to tell me how to DIY fix the ticking
that comes from the dash as if tiny hail is hitting the windshield. Sometimes it comes from the right side (95% of the time). Very infrequently, it ticks from the left side. No way the dealer can replicate this.

Sometimes sounds are tricky to locate and may sound like they are emanatting from someplace else...try what I suggested above...you might be surprised and have nothing to lose.
